Actually, Doctor Who ran for many years on various PBS stations in the US - That's how I used to watch it as a kid.

Oh, the gentle wobble of the cardboard scenery, grown men dressed as enormous ants, and that Tank On Acid, the Dalek. William Hartnell, looking back, was my favourite Doctor, not just for being the first, but bringing a cold ruthlessness to the part.

Agreed, William Hartnell was the best Doctor. But I watched Tom Baker's episodes much more avidly.
