Johnson Tricone

Postby heckergt » Sun Aug 12, 2007 1:27 am

I played a used Johnson Tricone today. It played and sounded better than I expected. Anyway, I want to get one. The one I played was used and the guy wanted $500. It seems I can buy a new one for around that price. I looked all over sacramento and cant find another one anywhere. Where is the best trustworthy online place to buy one?? Saw some new ones on Ebay for $500. Should I be wary about those ones? I have a Gibson Dobro DWF60 that I would be willing to trade for a johnson tricone that has the mods done. Any inputs are appreciated. Thanks.

I would suggest the Republic Tri...

Engraved Tricone

Don't work for them, they are just better made!

PappyJ who owns (I think) Coast to Coast music is a Johnson dealer, and from what I've heard from Ric, he'll cut us BRB members a deal on Johnsons.

Thanks for the info,

I did some research on the republic guitars. I decided that I am going to get a tricone from frank. Everything I read was really positive.

I took my Gibson Dobro down town today in hopes to get the money to buy a republic. The darn store wanted to give me next to nothing for it. I couldnt believe it. They said that they would have to be able to double thier money on it. They said they would sell it for around $1000-$1100. I couldnt let it go for $500. Thats not even enough money to buy the republic tricone with. I listed it on Craigslist, maybe someone will buy it soon.

If anyone is interested in buying it, check craigslist. I will sell it for $800.00

Try reso-nation

Postby tobie » Thu Aug 16, 2007 8:28 am

Why don't you advertise on reso-nation (http://www.reso-nation.org/forum.php)? It's probably the most active reso forum and they'll advise you on a realistic asking figure too.

Someone even offered a wood body swap for his Johnson tricone in June (http://www.reso-nation.org/viewtopic.php?t=3734). It might still be available...

Sure enough, if a new Johnson is a consideration, look at that link above "Please click here to support our sponsor, Coast to Coast Music..." PappyJ, our board's Administrator, is a Johnson Dealer, and if you contact him through that link (either using the E-mail link off the page or the phone number found there and tell him you're from BRB) he'll give you a better price than Johnson allows dealers to advertise. I've bought instruments from Pappy (whose real name is John Watts) before), and can tell you that he's a very nice fellow to deal with. That supports the operation of the BRB forum as well.

After doing some research and long hard thinking, I decided to give the Republic Tricone a shot. It came in yesterday and I absolutely love it. If boobs were tone, this guitar would be wearing a double D sized bra!!!

Congrats on the new guitar.

I'm in the market for a squareneck tricone (I had a chance to play a vintage National last week and fell in love with the sound.) There seems to be a name change in the works for Johnson. According to a dealer I spoke with, Johnson'll become Recording King after the first of the year. I don't quite understand the link between Johnson-Recording King-MusicLink. I suspect that ML is merely an importer and distributor.

Anyway, I ordered a Johnson online through The Music Motel. I'll find out when they get back to work if the guitar's in stock.
