3rd position scale?

A place to post harmonica tabs separately from harmonica discussion so it doesn’t get lost in the messages. To make it easy to search we suggest starting a new thread for each song posted and include the song name in your title. We’ll be able to make a nice archive if we keep tab here and discussion on the other forums.

3rd position scale?

Postby flatpaul » Mon Dec 18, 2006 3:16 pm

What's this 3rd position scale then?

I only rarely hit notes higher than the 7 blow... Sometimes I hit the 9 blow and draw but I really only play 2nd position and sometimes 1st. I feel that I need to unlock the rest of the harp now. . .

I'd really like to learn 3rd but I can't find the tab online and I don't know which bends to aim for. I tried to work out the scale myself but I reckon that I got it wrong because it sounds really weird... I'm assuming that I'm supposed to start on 3 blow? Am I missing something???

Can anybody help? I know you can... So I'm gonna say thanks in advance!

In 3rd position I believe is the 1draw as the root, though it could be 2blow, but I've written both below as a minor scale!

You can play a minor scale like this: 4draw, 5blow, 5draw, 6blow 6 draw, 7draw bend, 7blow, 8draw

or if using 2 blow a minor scale looks like this

2blow, 2draw bend, 2draw(or 3blow) natural, 3draw, 4blow, 4draw, 5blow

Thanks man - I'm more interested in the 4 draw start. I can't seem to get with it though. I just think that the 5 blow doesn't sound 'right' or something...

Hmmm i get what you mean, but i think it's one of those notes that are best avoided sometimes, i think it's a major 2nd, which if i'm right normally sounds iffy to say the least in that scale!

Damn it seems like long ago that I posted this!

Thanks for the advice. I've been using 5 blow sparingly and sticking a 6 draw bend in - it sounds alright to me...

Thanks for the heads up on that site,
