Robert Johnson Video Clip (purported but 1941

Postby lastgoodbye » Mon Feb 13, 2006 9:59 pm

Anyone know of a link where I can see the short clip that was supposedly Robert Johnson playing in the streets in Rueville, Mississippi?

It has since been believed that it was not him because a movie marquee shows the name of a film which came out in 1941 while he died in 1938. I am very interested in seeing the clip though. I heard there were a couple sources on the internet, but I can't find them anywhere. Thanks in advance for any help.

I saw that clip in a documentary. I didn't think it looked like him. And the people doing the documentary didn't think it was him either. I can't remember the name of it though (but I think I may have a copy on VHS). It had bunch of people doing RJ tunes on it. Sonny Landreth and Warren Haynes did killer versions of RJ tunes. I know I've got that here somewhere. I haven't seen it on the web though.

I saw that in a Robert Johnson documentary, I think it was called Hellhounds On My Trail.

Both Honeyboy Edwards and Robert Jr Lockwood were there and said it wasn't him.

If I can locate my DVD I can do a frame grab and post it.. I'll look for it.

Somewhere in interwebland, there's a French language website dealing with some of the recent "Robert Johnson" photos, I'll try to find it later - the photos are at least a little bit interesting.

PS. Looks like that particular page no longer exists. There was a BRB thread about it some time ago, but I can't find that either :(

PPS. However, I did find the alleged "3rd Robert Johnson Photo" on another site. Here it is:

Hint: it's not Robert!

I liked the statement from Robert Junior Lockwood about the old film clip: "I don't care how many times you watch it, it ain't never gonna be Robert."

Trivia note: In Bob Dylan's recent book he states unequivocally that there is now a film clip of Robert Johnson playing guitar.

I guess I somehow figured he would have access to at least as much information as I do...

Even making the vast assumption that the frame Stumblin' posted is R.J, the muso depicted appears to be wearing a neck rack and harp.

If that's the case, it would be the first time I had ever heard of Poor Bob playing the harp.

According to most accounts, harp was RJ's first instrument.

However the film clip was proven to be some other musician long ago, the movie poster in the background is for an early 40s movie.

If I remember straight, Johnny Shines tells the story on one of those video documentaries of he and RJ losing their guitars. On the road going out of town RJ pulled out a harp and started playing and JS danced and held his hat out. They had traffic backed up, but made enough money to both buy another guitar.

From the way Johnny Shines describes RJ, I would be sort of surprised to discover any instrument he couldn't have played.

I read somewhere that when Son House and Willie Brown would take a break from playing, Robert Johnson would sometimes try to play their guitars. This was before he learned to play and Son House would scold him and tell him to put it down and play his harp because nobody wanted to here him play the guitar.

Neither of those photographs are of Robert Johnson, the famous blues singer & guitarist. Does that clarify matters?
