Brass Slide Question

Postby mmapags » Mon Aug 24, 2009 1:34 pm

In the never ending quest to fnd the perfect slide, I bought a 3/4 in. brass nipple this weekend and made a slide. I have a couple of other slides. A glass one I made that has great tone and fits well but is too light. I also have a diamond glass slide that also fits great and has great tone but is too light. I love the tone and weight of the brass one but it's was too big and slips around on my pinky. Anyone have any ideas? The brass nipples only seem to come in 1/2 and 3/4" increments. 3/4 is what I used and the 1/2 inch was too small.

I like loose slides. Slide it all the way on your finger and crook your finger inside it.

Or try it on your ring finger. The pinky isn't the be all and end all of sliding. There are things that are easier to do with one finger or another, and there are things you can't do with your slide on your pinky. (Like fretting in front of the slide to make a sus chord, for example.)

I have bony fingers and can never find slides that fit, especially on my pinky. I read a tip on here about using a strip of the adhesive backed velcro (the loop-soft side, not the hook-scratchy side!). Works perfectly and feels really good. Give it a try!

I wear my slide on my pinky. With my Diamond slide, which is a bit loose, I cut the little finger off of one of those heavy yellow kitchen rubber gloves. I use that inside the slide and it works great, kind of like a slide condom :)

Depends where you live or work, but if you can lay hands on a strip of 1/8" rubber, an inch wide or something of that nature, you can use that to pack it out, I do, don't even need adhesive to hold it in place.

The expensive but guaranteed way to a perfect fit is to buy a little lathe and some brass stock and a selection of drills around the size you want for the finger in question.

Bony fingers? Not alone in that. We just have to live with it. But who wants flabby fingers anyway? :wha:

Thanks for some ideas to try! I had thought of the rubber glove idea but wanted to see what others had discovered first.

Oh... I got one of them when I hacked my finger to pieces as a chef... unfortunately it wasn't latex, so I didn't draw the conclusion...

If it's only him playing with his johnson surely he doesn't need one?

Rico's Johnson has reached a near legendary status..... :wha:

Here's a new idea (courtesy of a visitor to our booth at a recent show) - get hold of a piece of scrap car seat covering, the satiny/velour type. This has a nice, furry outer 'skin' with plain cloth inside - stick the plain cloth side into the slide walls using adhesive glue or tape - and the furry side will feel comfortable on the finger and is really hard-wearing

Slide On!

Ian.

I think it already is legendary, if you google "Rico's Johnson" it takes you right back to BRB
