bass tab or runs

Postby JakeyVimto » Wed Aug 12, 2009 9:43 pm

OK, Mr England has got me thinking of playing a little bass in a month or two. I know maybe two blues basslines.

If anyone has any cute little cheaty tabs or tips for a part time bassist who really doesnt know his scales all that well, esp up the neck, I'd be really indebted if you could share them here.

Who knows how many guitarists lives I could improve by busking it as a blues bassist for a couple hours. I am a bass player in a rock band, but only enough to get by. Not really properly competant, if you get my drift.

For any help, truly grateful...

Hi Jakey,

Been on holidays for a few weeks-yeee-haaaa :D . Playing bass is not all that hard even if you suggest you only do it part time. Switching to full-time depends on your mood and most importantly, enthusiasism! If I were you, I would try to do both scales and tab runs, with more emphasis on tabs because you wanna sound "good". There is nothing wrong with doing scales, but they can be laborious.

So I'd say, get to know the song you wanna do with tab and then buy these small bass scale book(s) and go through some scales in your own time, perhaps one a day! :D Try different positions as well, example, "open" position or "5th" fret incoporating the same notes. You'll be in demand cuz bands all over the world are crying out for bass player!!

I get some of Pink floyd songs for bass through tab as another example. Lastly, try and come up with your own riffs to songs either covers or originals!

cheers

Hey multi, thanks for the reply, but I should point out that Im not switching to full time bass-playing. If just considering filling in on a open mic type situation for an hour or two at this festival Im going to. Believe me, figuring out my own riffs and runs is all i do, but they never sound like blues and I think this gig would require some honest to god predictable blues patterns so the guitarists know whats coming, I was just wondering if anyone had a good one to share. For the same reason, I cant say what song I want to do, because itll basically be what the band want to do. Im trying to figure out a couple of all purpose 12 bar lines to fake it with, is all.

Its a public service for jamming guitarists, really...

cheers,

Hi Jakey,

Cool! If it's blues jam session just play along to the chords of the guitarist and do some riffs as you do. Add blues notes every now and then and you'll soon "hear" in your head to the feel of the song. Have fun-that's the main thing! :D
