Fuse Question

Postby Bluesrocker » Tue Oct 20, 2009 6:11 pm

Hello, all,
The other night at a gig, my '83 Fender Concert blew a fuse. (Luckily, between sets). I usually carry a few extra fuses but that night I had forgotten. The Concert is a 60 watter and it takes a 2.5 amp, 125V Slo-Blo. That night the rhythm guitar player had a 2.5 amp, 250V Slo-Blo, so I used it. Can I continue to use the 250, or will it blow real soon? By leaving it in, will it damage the amp in any way? I'm picking up a few of my 125V fuses today and I'll pop it out and replace it, anyway. Any info?

I don't believe the voltage rating matters provided it's higher than what the amp expects. The same does not hold true of amperage, since the fuse's job is to fail when there is too much current. Either fuse should be ok.

:!: You are correct. The voltage won't matter as long as it's not rated lower. You wouldn't want to use a 12 volt fuse or breaker, for example. You do not want to substitute a higher amperage rated fuse as it will allow more current to flow before blowing thus risking damage to the equipment or even fire! I have seen folks replace blown fuses in their autos with a higher amp rated unit and the insulation melted off of the wires before the fuse blew!
