'08 Les Paul Jr. Rocks Hard!!

Postby texas blues » Sat Sep 12, 2009 11:47 pm

Hey ya'll. Earlier this year I had been on the hunt for a Jr. Played a couple down at the local joint but wasn't thrilled about the setups and intonation. All was not for naught and I ended up getting a Goldtop which I absolutely love. Fast forward to last week. I had consigned my '83 Strat as I rarely play the 'thang and last week it sold. I went in yesterday to collect the check and the same Jr. I played before was still there. I gave it another go but the G string just would not stay in tune. I told one of the cats there that if he could get the beast to intonate and get it set up properly I'd roll over the cash from the Strat. Came back today, the guitar played hot, blue and righteous. Took it home. I wasted no time in having a threesome with me, the Jr. and a Marshall 2204 50w. Within 10 minutes (a new record for me) I came 3 times and the Marshall was pregnant! This guitar straight up shits chunks of tone! It's a P90 monster on crack. 'Lawd have mercy!

I got a great deal too as it was half the price of list with 2 minor unnoticeable dings. Lock the door and pull down the shades for some porn!

Looks good with tweed...

Even better with the now pregnant 2204.

Body is a two piece mahogany with the split on the lower bout from the controls down. Barely noticeable.

Best twang and bang for a non histeric Gibson guitar.

Salute' ya'll, TB.

Nice TB !!
I hardly ever use the bridge pickup on my Custom Shop LP Special.
I would like to have one of those Jr.s set up exclusively for slide.

I do love my LP Special. It sounds so perfect.

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout! That tone is the motherfuckin' truth! (please 'scuse my french) Dude, what looper you using? I've got a Digitech which is great but the timing on hitting the pedal plumb evades me. I was looking at a vintage special this last week too but the short tenon put me off as I get a little yanky on the neck. Jump back and kiss 'yo 'sef one time Grady. That version of Red House is bad as you want to be! Smokin'! What took you so long?

Prost! TB.

Thanks TB !!

I'm using the DigiTech Jam Man Looper.
My 1960 Les Paul Special VOS has the Long Neck Tenon, it most definitely does.

I also did a cover of Junior Well's "Sell my Monkey" and Hooker's "Boom Boom Boom" that night and I used the looper even more in those tunes but, the guy operating the camera fucked those clips up. All he had was bits & pieces.

I might take my Camcorder with me this week.
But then again, who the heck is going to run it if I do ??

I laughed my ass off at that statement. It shits chunks of tone huh? There are a lot of guitars I would love to own, but if I could pick any guitar, it would either be an R6 with a black top (see pic below), or a LP Jr. I love those fat 50's necks. That's a beautiful axe TB. And it looks nice sittin there with that Champ. (I kinda miss that amp  )

Some guy on the MyLesPaul forum had this bad boy for sale. I fell in love with it instantly. He said it was a '58, with a black top and P90s. Wouldn't that just be a '56 with a black top? :wha: I thought the only difference between a '56 and a '58 was the finish and the pickups.

That looks like a refin from a Goldtop. I've never seen ebony top with with the natural back. Either way, Lefty that is gorgeous. The only way to determine really is having the serial # to find out what it was originally.

On another note, I'm having problems with the G, B, and E sticking. Graphite doesn't seem to help it much so I think a new nut is in store. No big deal. I played " Just Got Paid " on it and nailed it like a $1,000 whore! Even wore the slide on my middle finger like Billy G and in standard tuning ta boot. Best twang and bang for the buck I can remember.

It's not a refin; the guy ordered it from the Custom Shop. It's still damn sexy. By far the best looking LP I have ever laid my eyes on.

Is the back of the headstock on your guitar a laminate? I've never seen that before. Man that thing is beautiful!

Roger that on the laminate, but just on the paddle, the neck below the nut is one piece. That CS ebony is almost as badass as this one...

This may be heresy in a thread with so many awesome high-dollar guitars but,
have you noticed that Epi is discontinuing their '56 Goldtop model w/ the P-90s ??
I'm thinking about grabbing one.

I must admit that I do prefer the "flat-tops" of my Gibson Custom Shop LP Special and TB's new LP Jr. to the regular arch-top LP's. I also prefer the wrap-around bridges.

Yep, but no pancake body. Thin 60's ebony topped neck. Lightning fast. Truckloads of mojo. (this one survived a fire in '84. Got new electronics and tuning machines.) Straight up rock and blues machine. Best guitar I ever played. Bought the R4 as a backup to the Pro. Now I'm addictified to the histerics. I want another R4, R8 or R9. I'm doomed!

I don't see that as heretical. I have a Epi '58 Korina V reissue that plays and sounds fine. Comes close to my Gibson V and overall a better twang and bang for the buck. Like any line of guitars, there's always good and bad one's individually, just a matter of picking through 'em all to find the one that suits you. I will say amongst the Gibson Custom Shop guitars, I don't have to sort through so many. Wraptails are the shit! I tailwrapped my V and LP Pro! Como se' dice en espanole...Pearly Gates?

Epi has discontinued those Goldtops before, then brought them back. They are really hot sellers. I've never played one, but if the P90s on it sound anything like my Agile's P90s, I'd stay away.

Lots of cats buy the Epi's and right off the bat upgrade the wiring harness, caps, and pups. Still less jing than shelling out for a new Gibbo. Lot's of good P90 clones out there, Fralin's although a bit pricey, come to mind. I'm very happy with Gibson P90's my self. Change those pups out in that Agile Lefty and you might feel different about that guitar.

Hey, I like Agile's P-90s! (They're Gotohs with ceramic magnets.)
