copies & counterfiet guitars

Postby birddog » Tue Jul 21, 2009 2:09 pm

Well I knew there were a lot of copies. Never really thought about counterfiet "Gibsons" and "Fenders" with the names. Seems like I will be more wary about trying to buy one online without a physical inspection. Although I guess the sound, quality of the manufacture and the playability will be what counts more so than the name on the headstock when parting with my cash.
Came across an ad on CL today for a guy that is promoting a website to help spot these fakes.
Just spent some time checking it out. Some good info that I never knew about. Some good photos. Its too bad no response from the companies being copied has been recieved.
Just thought I'd pass it along.

When I worked for Dale Bluebond, I had a chance to check out a fake Gretsch Sparkle Jet. The uber glossy finished disguised an inferior piece of wood.

I also knew a dealer in second hand instruments who had a sheet of Fender decals . Every once in a while, someone would get a great deal on a vintage Strat. I mean an unbelievable deal.

I haven't yet run into a fake Johnson, Rogue, Agile or SX.

Wouldn't that look great on a headstock?
