Caution: Goldtop Porn!

Postby texas blues » Sat May 09, 2009 1:04 am

Hey ya'll once again from the big dry ditch here in Las Vegas. Earlier this week I ventured to one of the local guitar joints in search of a LP Jr. I've been coveting one for quite a while. I shuffled into the store and found 2 Jr.s along the wall, one a cherry mahogany satin finish and the other a dark brown satin finish. I tried both and could not get them to tune. Good guitars but the tailwrap bridges are notorious for having to wrestle with them to intonate. I decided to hold off. I'm in no hurry right? As I'm replacing the 2nd played Jr. back on the wall stand, I look up to see this beautiful guitar that as I gaze upon it, I become soothed into a dreamy state and began to hallucinate as if I was with Raquel Welch in 1,000,000 B.C. The guitar was a knockout but I was pressed for time and had to split.

I couldn't get this guitar out of my head and spent a couple restless nights thinking about playing it, loving it, coveting it. So that's it. During my break today I head down to the joint to play my fantasy. I get to the store and I'm getting into the dream state. Somehow I managed to pull her down from the wall hangar and I gaze upon her......this beautiful girl (and guitars are always women btw) is a 2007 Gibson Les Paul R4. P90's. Tailwrapped. Gold and cream. Merely lovely. I check her out. Used but not abused. Super clean. I plug her into an Orange Tiny Terror and set it to 7W, volume at half , and about a 1/4 on the gain. I crank both volumes on the guitar and back off a quarter, same with the tone. I one finger a low E chord. Barkomatic! Crank the neck pup full up and 'Lawd have mercy! Pure hot voodoo love tone baby. Sounds like a she-wolf howlin' at midnite. Tight bass, punchy mids. Searing highs. Pure P90 tone. After 20 minutes or so, I take it to the shop owner and hand it to him and tell him he's not rehanging it. 2K and change out the door. I feel like Al Pacino in Scarface. " I say che's a tiger. Che's for me!

I have looked at several R4's online to be sure. Most in the 3-4.5 K range. Turns out '07 was a very good year for wood at Gibson and the year and model get rave reviews. The one I bought had been sold from the same store in '07 and originally went for over 4K. I got it minty used for just half! As they now only make the R4 out of the custom shop (word has it that those could be up to a year wait and up to 6K) I got lucky and struck gold!!
Well...ya'll be the judge.

You lucky bastard! If I could have any electric guitar it would either be that one or the 56 Goldtop. I don't think they make (or even made) the R4 left handed. The R6 is though. I seriously love the look of Goldtops. They are so sexy. The guy I jam with went out about 4 weeks ago and bought an R7 Goldtop. That thing is the ballsiest Les Paul I have ever heard and that neck... so huge. Like half a baseball bat and I love it. Does yours have that big old fat neck on it?

We want soundclips of this beast. :D

Yeah Lefty the neck is a typical baseball bat 50's neck. My LP Pro has the 60's thin neck and I was skeptical if I would like the 50's...I skeptical for all of 2 seconds once I got my hands on it. This guitar spits out tone in chunks!

Plugged it into the JMP 2204 this morning. Blew the .5 amp fuse. Replaced it, blew it again. Off to the amp vet on Monday. I've been having fun running it through the tweeds, both the champ and deluxe and it's as if the guitar was designed for tweed in mind. It really sounds good into your Champ 600! Did you buy your buddy's 600?

Gibson quit making the R4 as a run but it's still available through the custom shop. I'm sure if you had the shekels they'd make a lefty. Tailwrap baby!

TB WIN!

I'm sure the custom shop would, but I ain't got those kind of shekels. I didn't pick up that Champ 600. My car window got busted and I went back to work yesterday after 13 days of no business. So, I've been watching my spending.

That's 50's neck is awesome, IMO. I like it better than the slim 60's neck, mainly because I've got big hands.

That's some serious dirty love wood there Lefty! What I have come to discover though is once you get comfortable financially, everything is justifiable. I'm not saying I'm rich or anything, I plan way ahead of time and save up. Some would dispute it and make a case that low end guitars compare to many of the vintage and custom shop instruments but I can say this.....I've played 100's if not more, vintage and new and copies over the last several years and the copies are not in the same ball park. Not even close. There's a reason that Fender and Gibson custom shops do heaps of business..they simply put out superior product. Save your money for that one day when you run across that dream guitar. I've done it more than once and it was worth the wait and every penny!

Cheers, TB.

pm me, we'll have to get together this summer. I'll do the cooking!

I've never really saved up for any of my instruments, which is probably why I really only own cheap made-overseas guitars. But I'm cool with that because I like my guitars. But, I have been putting money aside and I sold my Sheraton II so I can get a Larrivee. I decided on the Larrivee L-03 acoustic. There's a guitar store here in PHX with one in stock and the guy is gonna cut me a deal on it. $885 out the door. I'm stoked to get it. It will be a couple more months until it's mine, but I am saving up.

That's the one I want. Left handed of course. But, I would like to hear what this R4 of yours sounds like. Let's here it through the Champ!

Now that looks like a guitar worth saving for! Reminds me of a Gibson J-45 but with a natural spruce top. Dig it!
There's a reason gems like that cost more. They're worth it!

Guilty as charged!! Denial is not just a river in Africa.TB Fail. But buying this R4? TB Win! While I have played alot of the CS guitars, I reckon I was underwhelmed and only got hold of some average guitars. The joint I got this from here in Vegas I have to say has heaps of way above average guitars...many CS. Just yesterday I played a Clownburst which absolutely smoked but killed your eyes to look at it...a real abomination! I also got to play a GT that was Sam Kinison's..which is going for 15K. Chunky hunk of voodoo love that one. My next goal is to find a real nice used R9. I'm diggin' the plaintops and honeybursts. BTW...the latest news is there is going to be a Pearly Gates Sig making it's debut soon. You can bet Billy will have several and I'll be looking for them when The Tops roll through town in July!

Cheers, TB.

I lost my jones for a Les Paul years ago (too damn heavy), but I've gotta say that your goldtop is gorgeous and exactly what I would get if I were still interested in a LP. Love those P90's, too.

You know TB, we're all free to change our mind at any time without warning.
I do it every day. That Gold-Top is like my 1960 Gibson Custom Shop LP Special, it's a
once in a lifetime find. Congrats.

In fact, I had a really good week and I'm sittimng here debating on ordering a Guitar Synth.
Check this out,
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/prod ... sku=150097

I could mount that pickup to my Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul and have every sound in the World at my fingertips.
I just bought one of these last week,
http://www.ibanez.com/AcousticGuitars/model-MSC650VV
and I'm having a blast with all the different sounds I can get out of it.
I'm thinking, "Why not go all the way and dive head-first into the World of Guitar Synths ? "
