I quit smoking on Chantix though I have tried to do cold turkey on two occasions, but of no use. I have smoked for around 5 yrs with pack a day. Thanks to chantix and the support my family provided me. It really helped me to get over my nicotine addiction and I don’t feel craving anymore. There is one thing which I would like to share and which helped me a lot initially, try having a glass of water when you feel craving the most. It a tough road but it's worth so best luck to all those who want to give up smoking.

I've been waiting, waiting,,, finally they're here. (Came in last month in Queensland). And I'm not happy!
Now, I hate smoke, can't stand it. When I'd get home my shirt, hair, even p/a and guitar leads reek of it!
(Not to mention the fact that I have a lung disease, and breathing that crap in wasn't what I needed)
So now, its great, no smoke.
BUT!
No smoke, no people. Every-ones staying home.
My regular sunday gig has been cut to every second sunday.
Its been a good earner too. Big bucks. Spewin!
The pubs nearly going broke. It seems like every body who goes to a pub smoke's.

I'm hoping things will pick up again.

Yep, Florida passed laws to prohibit smoking in bars and restaurants several years ago. There were objections and predictions that business would loose money. I don't hear anything about it now so I guess it didn't cause lasting problems for business.
I smoke an occasional cigar, very occasional. It's been a couple of months or more since my last. Smoke doesn't normally bother me except in Casinos on cruise ships, unbelievably thick. However, I agree with the laws. I believe in allowing people to take any risk they want to as long it just affects them. Second hand smoke is dangerous to people other than the smoker.
Skydive if you want to but don't drag other people out the door with you.

Well, I learned something just now, thanks. These posts are dated and some go back to 2006 or maybe earlier! Got to pay attention to that in the future. So, what happened to Lightninboy?

Yep, Florida passed laws to prohibit smoking in bars and restaurants several years ago. There were objections and predictions that business would loose money. I don't hear anything about it now so I guess it didn't cause lasting problems for business.

or maybe they went out of business quietly? If they'd all stopped at the same time, you'd have heard about it, but slowly going under, one taking a bit longer than the other, no one really notices until you look around 2 years later and half the places you used to go to are no longer there...

since the "Smokers' Inquisition" started in Belgium, my partner and I stay home a LOT more than we used to, and IF we go out, we either find a bar where we CAN smoke or go home early - hey, if you're going outside for a smoke, you might as well walk to the car and drive home... you're warm and dry and at home you can smoke in the comfort of your couch - too bad if we "help" close some business that way, maybe the non-smokers should start going out more, instead of banning smoke because "we can't stand to be in a room filled with smoke" and then NOT going to the smoke-free place.

Lightnin Boy had some sort of progressive lung failure, a crying shame for anyone to go that way, but for someone you get to know, even at this physical distance, I think some of us shed a tear when we heard. He kept his sense of humour until he got too weak even to press keys, probably after, but we still miss him from time to time.

Crack a beer or whatever for him; I've got a bottle of cider on the go here.

Well it's certainly possible that some clubs/bars went quietly out of business due to the smoking ban. Although with contentious social issues like this it would be surprising if a result like that wasn't exploited by the proponents of smoking everywhere.
There will rarely if ever be agreement when society controls behavior. We all dislike being controlled by other people. That's probably a good thing. It serves to keep us as free. To repeat myself, I am a big supporter of allowing people to take any informed risk they want to with their health and life. But there is no doubt that second hand smoke is dangerous to people other than the smoker. But you propose one solution - allow the non smoker to choose a smoke free place to party. Voters opted for a different solution in a lot of the world. I understand that makes some people unhappy. It's no surprise. It's normal.

I only proposed a "solution" for having less bars cloes: that the non-smokers start going out, since smokers are no longer doing it (or much less) - the non-smokers already HAVE their precious smoke-free places to go to: EVERYWHERE,

only problem is, they had them made smoke-free for them, then they don't go... too busy complaining about the crisis being bad for business, I guess
