What do you wear at gigs?

Problems, how to get them, favorite songs to play, groupies, funky bar owners, etc. NO names of clubs, please.

nobody can beat that outfit! Walter

I remember wearing that silver suit to one of the SXSW music festivals, down in austin. My car had broke down, and I wanted to go to the hotel that was hosting the Festival. This was in the early days of SXSW(I was there the year it started), and it was pretty loose. I took the city bus, in 90+ temps, to the hotel. The entire bus freaked when I got on with my suit, 10 rings, and guitar/harps/briefcase. The bus driver was actually stopping every bus that came the other way, to say look at me. They were convinced I was a superstar, and wanted to know which one I was. I kept saying if I was, do you think I would be riding the city bus?? That didn't seem to phase them none. When I got off the bus, I was dizzy from all the attention I received. I never felt anything like it since. I imagine it is why famous people don't ride packed city buses. I took a cab home..... Anyway, I went to the lobby and set up my briefcase with my info, put on my 63 jazzmaster, and just hung out. I had a huge crowd gather, including a japaneese news crew. They interviewed me for their show. Huey Meaux, the crazy cajun, who produced many a hits way back, came up to me, and just busted up. He took me under his wing for the rest of the festival. Louis Myers, the founder of the festival never forgave me. I didn't have the $ to buy the armband to get in, and he told me I was ripping him off. I said you hired me to play the festival, and you use to give out free wristbands to the musicians, but not this year, and I was broke, and trying to make it. Needless to say, I never played another SXSW, or got booked in Liberty Lunch (his club) again. But what a time I had that week with Huey! Walter

I don't dress up for the house parties. I save the suits for the clubs. You 2 are welcome up here anytime. Walter

Tonight, I just wore some black BDU's. The band after us was wearing all the nose-ring #####. I wasn't a million miles away.

The ol'fart band I was playing WITH, though...pocket chinos, white shoes...even some sandal-and-sock action. now THAT's embarassing.

Hey, what are BDVs? And thanks Walter, we will be back.
I found two black halter type tops, one with a sequined butterfly at the top that if I get this gig with this band as their drummer I will buy them and wear at performances. Cause these are some hard songs to learn and I will have earned them and maybe some new low rise levis. Maybe some glittery eye shadow to go with it. Just a dream for now. And I've been looking at shoes - my favorite thing - but I have to be able to drum for hours in them. My friend Jim just fixed a broken double pedal that I got for free and will be starting on that tonight!!!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Apr-23-06 AT 11:38 PM (EST)]These, from a surplus store; comfortable and durable, I have several sets. I don't usually wear em' at shows - I usually wear a jacket and tie - but since the guys I was playing with dress casually...

I have a couple of really good shots of me in the suit I wore in Memphis at the IBC (a vintage suit I bought at a thrift store), but I have no way to post it here (I don't have one of those photo hosting sites).

With the bigger band, I usually wear black slacks and a black short sleeved "gig shirt" (a vintage looking short sleeved shirt). We wore suits in Memphis because that's what Big Daddy (the bandleader) wanted us to wear.

When I play with the acoustic band I usually wear black jeans and a gig shirt, or if it's cold out I wear a decent long sleeved shirt. The regular gig we have is so casual I can pretty much wear what I want to.

Hey, what are BDUs?

BDU = Battle Dress Uniform, aka "fatigues".

My more typical onstage look is this kind of thing; not as Flashy as Walters, but they know I came to play.
