First Band Gig

Played in a band today for the first time, in church, on short notice. On lap steel in Open D. Due to unfamiliarity with the situation and the music, I kept the volume fairly low and just played some slid-up notes and double stops out of the chords for the most part and tried not to stand out. Since I was sitting right up front and used that bright yellow "Police Line" custom lap steel, though, that didn't entirely work.

Had fun, and I'll work out some fills and walkups-downs for future opportunities. It was a nice introduction.

Nice going Rico. Jesus loves lap steel.

That'd probably make a good T-shirt.

So, otherwise, any reflections on the experience...?

Reflections? Those call for thinking, don't they?

I was way nervous, not having practiced much in the limited time I knew I was going to do it (I'd planned to "cram" but things got in the way.) Worship minister was laughing that it was the only time he'd seen me dead serious and not saying a thing. I think he noticed the sweat on top of my head, too. But I told myself that it wasn't up to me, I just needed to add a bit to it, and not screw up too bad. The other musicians were very encouraging. I'm looking forward to doing it again, and as I said I'll get the hang of it. It's something you've just got to do, and learn by doing. Can't do anything practicing all by yourself at home that'll get you fully ready for it. When the music started I just tried to pay attention to what was going on around me and what I was doing, sang along and had a good time. Didn't embarrass myself or cause any major disruption. I count that as a success.

Your approach was right on!! Chords and double stops, and in Open D that in itself can sound great. This week you'll be dazzling them with all the notes!! 8)

Thanks!

I wasn't in the group this week, they put the guy who plays sax in instead. I'll get back up there soon. :D
