My GAS CAN amp arrived yesterday!

Postby wwpete52 » Fri Apr 07, 2006 12:31 pm

The gas can amp the I bought on Ebay Sunday came today! Wow! It is much more than I thought it would be. It's called "The Can." It was made in the USA by SLM (the same folks that made the original Crate amps). I took it apart and cleaned it up. It takes 8 size "D" batteries. It works great! I assume that it was made in the 70s or early 80s.

I e-mailed the folks at SLM and asked them when the amp was manufactured. This was their reply:

"Hello Wally, 'THE CAN' was manufactured here in St. Louis at our Crate factory in the early 1980's. We built about 10,000 total but I very rarely get inquiries about them. One thing that came up about 10 years ago was that Curt Kobain mentioned in an article that he used one to get a unique sound on one of his recordings. Thanks, Chuck Phillips"

That's kind of cool! I would post a sound clip buy I don't know how to do that! (I'm ol'skool)

I'm really suprised how loud it gets without distorting.

Sounds cool. I hope it doesn't draw too much power, though. 8 D's could be a little pricey.

Too, funny. Ricochet, did you ever answer my turntable question? I can't find where I asked it.

I just want one of those amps! I don't know why. I am kind of jealous, Pete. Im olskool, too.

I answered it, with words to the effect of "Dunno." Google's your friend. You need to know the make and model of the turntable. The belt itself will be a standard part, but figuring out which one is the trick.

I'm flying to Nashville this weekend. I will return on the 14th. When I get back I might just sell it to you if you still want one and can't find another. Let's both think about it.

Thanks Ricochet. I will google. Actually, my friend who fixed the turntable 10 years ago wants me to flame his daughter's bicycle so I'll let him work his magic in trade.

Pete, I would feel really bad if you sold me that amp because I think you like it a lot. Don't do it. I like it but you need to mess with it and have some fun. I have plenty of stuff around here to play with. Maybe later on if you've had your fun and you don't want it anymore let me know. OK? I have had my eye on those little battery operated pignose's for years and one of these days when I can justify it I will probably buy one.
