Opening act request?

Postby mnozzolio » Fri May 16, 2008 10:16 am

Here's the situation: I received an unsolicited email from a youngish singer-songwriter who asked if she could do a short opening set for me at a coffeehouse gig I have in July. I don't know her, though according to her soundbites, she's a competent musician - just not my style. She wants to do 20 minutes and plug her CD.
I told her it wasn't my call, but she contacted the management, who said that it is my call.
I'm inclined to let her do it, just because I'm a nice guy. I also remember when an established band let my band do a short opener, but heck, we were all friends anyway. Karma, pay it forward, all that.
Maybe I'm mistaken, but isn't this a pretty cheeky move on her part? There are a lot of artists for whom I'd like to open, but I'm not going to ask -- maybe I should. Also, I don't want her to make a habit out of it, and put me in the position of wanting to say no.
Any thoughts?

It is pretty cheeky, but:

Well, you dont get nothing for being shy.

I know a lot of people who write a couple of songs then sit around waiting for someone to magically ring them offering gigs!

So I applaud the youngster for having the brass neck to ask.

The worst result is that you say no, even then shes lost nothing at all.

Can she upstage your band? If she can then I'd say no. It would suck having the audience want her back after a tune or two from you all. I've seen that happen at concerts. Molly Hatchet opened for Cheap Trick and after one Cheap Trick song me and about 20,000 other people were yelling for more Molly Hatchet. Cheap Trick's singer, Robin Somebody, started yelling and calling us names, it got real ugly.

I say help the youngster out. She may become famous and remember the kindness.
However it's been my experience that "no good deed goes unpunished"

still....

Thanks for the all of the comments and advice. I never really doubted that I'd let her play - I don't want to be a jerk about these things, especially since it's a small coffeehouse gig. I was just more surprised, but hey, I may try it myself. Kelly Joe Phelps, are you listening?

No, we're just all curious about what this "youngish singer-songwriter" looks like. If she looks like Jewel or Norah Jones, I say go for it!

Just pray she don't look like one of our "national treasures", Nora Batty - http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/ichud ... EC0474.jpg

it all sounds abit weird to me. Why cant she get her own gig. Good call to put it back onto the venue. We had a guest trumpet player at a regular gig one night and afterwards the management told us that they hired us and not us with a trumpet player. The trumpet player was good but just not the sound the venue owners wanted. Good on you for being a nice guy just hope it doesnt come back and bite you on the bum.

over the years bands Ive played with have opened for some big name bands, however it was that way because we were matched with the groups of bands, not a shot in the dark, I would not do it, Ive had the "let me do a tune" thang and could not get em off the stage with TNT,
