The amp certainly affects the tone a lot more than the "pups" (God, I hate that term!) do. (Except when the amp is very clean.) But there are some wonderful sounding cheap amps, just as with guitars.

I own an artcore and I'll second it. I like Ibanez, to my ears it's a lot of bang for the buck.

Artcores are just fine, but they are of varying quality. Just make sure you play the one you are going to buy. I have played at least 60 of them and I would say 20 were not very good, while 40 were very good. Pick them up and play and you will know right away.

As far as amps go, buy a used one. Amps to look at and consider are as follows:

Peavey Classic 20 or 30
Peavey Delta Blues
Ampeg Jet II
Epiphone Valve Standard
Fender Blues Deluxe
Fender Pro Jr.
Fender Blues Jr.
Crate Vintage Club Series
Trace Elliot Velocette
Harmony 1842
Roland Micro Cube or Blues Cube

welcome,
I have an artcore af-75. It is a nice guitar built really well and doesn't sound bad. It is a good choice for a hollow body electric at a limited budget. It sounds real nice through my Fender pro junior and my friends blues junior. Either of these will be a good sounding setup for a budget and are surprisingly loud...Delta

Peavey Classic 30 is about the most bang you can get for your amp dollar. Tweed cover and smoking tone from Strats or Pauls or just about anything you plug into it. Good deals on used stuff out there if you look around.

I like the Delta Blues, which is the same thing with a single 15" speaker. They have a 2x10 version, too.

I am a rookie guitar player and wanted to have an electric rig to play besides my reso. I hit the web (Musicians Friend) and found an Epiphone Les Paul Classic for $370ish and an Epiphone Valve Jr. combo for $110. I absolutely love playing both. I would tell you to take it somewhere as soon as you get it, and get a set up and a new nut. The nut was kind of cheap and caused some buzzing because the groove was a little deep on the 5 string. But I think it is a steal on both items. Good luck and welcome to the Road!

Another place to look for guitars is http://www.rondomusic.net. They import guitars from Korea and China. Their Agile line of guitar are from Korea and are very good for the money. Equal to or better than any of the Korean stuff out there at better prices.

I just bought an Agile 2000 Goldtop from them and I am very pleased. It is as much a Les Paul as my Les Pauls are and for $159. They are amazing!

I really, really, really like(love) my new Agile 2000 in Black Cherry flame. Couple that with either a Fender pro jr...(which sounds better than a blues jr to me)or an Epi valve jr, and man o man can play some blues! On the cheap too!!
