Buy a "Gig Bag Book of scales", learn the scales and modes. Practice them to a metronone or better yet a drum machine. You will be surprised in what advancements you will make. As you are playing scales to a beat, all sorts of ideas will come into your head. This method makes learning the basics fun. The great Jacco learned this way, his father was a pro musician, taught him the need to learn the scales. My mentor is a pro jazz guitarist, he also is an advocate of learning the scales, top to bottom, bottom to top, sideways , backwards ,forward, and any idea you can come up with.
