Anybody ever play blues on a bass box?

Postby whitewolfofsc » Sat Apr 29, 2006 5:35 pm

Has anyone ever used a bass kalimba, "bass box" or "Rhumba box" to play bass for blues songs? It sounds like an acoustic upright bass, and I have heard it used in bluegrass and folk music before, as well as calypso music. I recently built one, and I have been playing it and jamming with my harp along with it. I am just messing around with it right now, playing both the box and my harp one handed at the same time. When I figure out the best way to mic this beast, I will record some tracks with it and post them. It has such a boomy percussive sound that it overloads a microphone quickly. I am experimenting with mounting a piezo pickup on it and will see if I need to dampen it so that it does not distort on me. I am curious if anyone else has used this instrument before...

Way back 5 years or so these things were discussed. I think the archives got screwed last year. I don't remember who was talking about them, or if they're still on here.

I will check the archives. I hope some people use these to play blues, as they sound remarkably like an acoustic upright bass. I am going to record a version of "I am the Wolf" By Howlin Wolf. The bass Kalimba just lends itself nicely to this type of song :)

Yeah, somebody was doing it, but I can't remember who. Folks come and go over the years, he may not be around now.

I did a search of all the archives. Nothing came up at all for "bass box". Do the messages eventually get pushed off into cyberspace?

No, but just over a year ago the board crashed. (I've never heard specifically, but I think it might have been hacked.) Lots of stuff was lost. Many of us had to reregister. That's why it shows me as joining last March.

I think "rhumba box" was the term used.
