Don't dispare...according to my wife (who is a photographer), trying to take good band pictures is equal to sports photography at night with a spotlight. It's hard. She took a good 50 or so at our last show and only the posed group shots afterwards looked decent...none of the action shots were worth keeping, and not only that, she says that the lighting in band situations is very hard to work with, as it's usually too dark in the audience with overly light spots on stage, and trying to get a flash just right is tough.

I know I've sat in front of my friends taking pics all through a gig and not found one I'd show.

So,either Rico's got ugly friends or we're startin' to gain a consensus here, lol! I agree,though-- I can think of very few gig pics I've seen that've turned out; daytime outdoor gigs mebbe.. Bosco had some good ones a while back, but I think the good ones were outdoors. His shots from the casino gig mighta been marginal.

Yeah, it shouldn't be that difficult to get a couple of good shots. My friend and I took the above photos Summer of '04 using digital cameras and we're both pretty much rank amateur photograpers. In most low light photography you will need to go into the manual mode and adjust a few settings.

Now capturing a band photo where at least one of the bandmates isn't making a stupid face is another story.

One of my local jams is run by a guy who is a professional photographer. He take photos of all the jammers and bands that play the venue and puts them up on the venue's website. Last year he sent me a CD-ROM with all the pictures he'd taken of me at the jam. He takes dozens of pictures in order to get one or two really good ones that are worthy of going up on the website. That's one of the secrets of good gig photography- take masses of shots. The picture I use as my avatar was taken by him.
