My GF just bought me a Silver Creek Upright from MF. It sure was a beauty but still needed 300. worth of set up. Now it plays like a dream and sounds great too. It is one of the thin bodied ones [8"] but can still be used in an acoustic blue grass or blues setting. Is has a piezo so I took FatPauls advice and sprang for a sansamp tone modeler preamp. Sweet!

I can't really put my finger on it but there is something mystical about playing the upright. I wish I had started long ago as it takes forever to get really good.

Oleman, how are you doing on that standup? What differences have noticed between that and a guitar? What tricks can you do on the standup that you can't do with a guitar? Do you play the bass guitar anymore?

bigdaddy, the URB is coming along pretty good as I can almost play with out thinking about what I'm doing; just find the groove and sail. It's taken a lot of practice and my technique sucks but my bandmates don't give me "that look" anymore. Me and the drummer just lock in and lay down the foundation and let the guitarplayers play and sing. About the only thing that a URB can do that a bass guitar can't is get a very unique rockabilly slap/percussive thing going by pulling on the strings, let them snap against the fingerboard, followed by a slap on the strings and fingerboard. With certain songs it's appropriate and showy and gives the bass a little recognition.

I sometimes leave the URB at home when the venue is to small to play it comfortably and use a fretless/acoustic/electric Rogue. This thing sounds like an upright and you can move around on it like a regular bass guitar.
I still play my fretted Steinberger copy and Fender jazz at home but not much.

How is your new gig coming along.
