SPAM and Commercial Messages

Postby pappyj » Fri Jul 11, 2003 10:59 am

The last two people who signed up apparently just to spam these forums, have been removed as members. I have no problem with legitimate participating members posting occasional commercial messages, but if you sign up just for that purpose, yer outta here!

Regards,

Well done, PappyJ.

The Yahoo "Acoustic Blues" site is now pretty well defunct, having become a source of amail spam for, mainly, porno sites.

Meanwhile... After posting on the "Setting Amp Volume Control..." thread, just now, the page keeps hanging up waiting, it says, for a picture to load which appears to be something like "icq white pages..."

Is this insidious, or a glitch?

Well done, Pappy.

The common concensus indicates that the membership certainly agrees with you.

Nice One, Pappy,
It's always such a dispriting experience when I find a new thread and read it only to find it's someone trying to hawk their wares. Particularly the ones who think they're being "cunning" and pretending they're passing on good "matey" advice.
Message Board spam isn't the only type of advertising that gets people's goats though, as the following BBC news article demonstrates:

Oh, yeah... good timing. I was just getting ready to purchase a bunch of horn charts at a cut-rate price from a new member and he gets whacked. I sure won't get a bargain price now!

Thanks Pappy.

Good call Pappy.

Of course we could institute an informal control mechanism wherein whosoever posts such a blatant spam recieves an e-mail from every member of the board. Said e-mails should be a sincere attempt to haggle over the stated discount price.

If we flood the SOBs with attempts to buy at quarter price, they probably won't come back anymore. of course, this could give the members the reputation of being cheap.

In my case, that would be true. I'm so danged cheap i wouldn't give you a cold.

Anyone who plays a style of music where your dream guitar came from a Sears-Roebuck catalogue is just assumed to be cheap anyway.

Thanks for kicking those guys off Pappy.

Hey! I resemble that remark. My 1959 Silvertone came from Sears-Roebuck. And I'm not cheap.. I'm just frugal (read as 'tight wad')
