Voice Discussion?

Postby alexjay » Thu Jan 16, 2003 10:24 am

Much as I hate to put even MORE work onto PappyJohn, I've been wondering for some time where on the forum we might talk about blues SINGING.

See, I'm a rank beginner at guitar, haven't even BEGUN to learn slide, can maybe hit the note I want on a harp once out of every four ... but you give me a song in almost any style--be it choral, musical comedy, rock (within limits), or blues--and I can tear the roof off of it. Hell, singing is perhaps the only thing in the world I feel truly comfortable in my skill--even moreso than writing.

(By the by--this is spurred by someone's mentioning "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"--I immediately did up a slow and sad downhome dirty blues crossed with gospel version [a cappella, but I'm going to see if I've learned enough to plink out a simple accompaniment, even if it's just strum-chord, strum-chord] which I'm going to try on a few friends and see what reaction it'll get)

Singing

I can hold a note as long as the Chase Manhattan Bank.
-- Ethel Merman

All the intelligence and talent in the world can't make
a singer. The voice is a wild thing. It can't be bred in
captivity.
-- Willa Cather

I have never given all of myself, even vocally, to anyone.
I was taught to sing on your interest, not your capital.
-- Leontyn Price

Let your soul do the singin'.
-- Ma Rainey

She sings like she's got a secret, and if you listen
long enough, she'll tell it to you -- and only you.
-- Linda Barnes

adios,
Lovat.
