2006 Expense Drive

Postby bosco » Wed Feb 01, 2006 1:51 pm

As you know, there is a considerable expense involved in operating this forum. A January, 2006, crash and subsequent move to another server created additional expenses above and beyond the usual operating expense.

I would encourage everyone to place an order with Coast2Coast to support our host, John Watts, a.k.a. "Pappy". Be sure to use the "Coast2Coast" link at the top of the forum page so he knows you came from the BigRoad. If you don't need any musical gear, any and all donations are appreciated, again by using the "Donation" link at the top of the page.

Not only will this help to insure that the forum is available to you, you'll get a nifty set of blue notes next to your username everytime you post, signifying your support of our host.

Thanks for your attention to this important matter, enjoy the forum and long live the blues!

I just placed an order. Who's with me?

Well...I'm all stocked up on gear - undoubtedly, except for National guitars (my name is BluesMcGoo and I'm a guitar-a-holic.) - but I did just make a donation.

Hopefully I will continue to maintain a regular schedule of donations this year.

Thanks for the reminder Bosco!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Feb-01-06 AT 11:10 AM (EST)]I recently recieved a small order from Coast to Coast - it's been a modest year financially here, but I have made Pappy my main source of some of my musical necessities.

Mm, but it might be a good idea to let some of these fine newer folks know that C2C has great prices, and that buying harps and stuff (My favorite thumbpicks, too) supports this website.

Just placed an order with Pappy. The kids will find out what they are getting me for my birthday in a couple of days ;)

Getting the money out off them may be a problem though.

The response to this thread has been great, but I'd like to encourage everybody that can, to make a purchase or a donation.

Not only do I want to see the site continue as it has, but it's only right to take some of the financial burden off Pappy and Coast2Coast.

A cheque is now trudging its way across the Atlantic; not a big cheque, but the first one I ever sent to a forum's host. Surprising how important this place has become to me, and the belonging to an International Musical Conspiracy.

Thanks for the nudge Bosco!
I ordered a new guitar thru Pappy and the price he gave me was under the price he is gonna advertise it for so I told him to charge me the advertised price and put the diff. toward the forum (now I too have a groovy lil Blue Note )! As Maxx said, this place is a wunnerful haven for me and I want it to live long and prosper!:7

We should make noise about this on the other boards, as I didn't realise for a long time how it all worked. But in my time nosing thru the Harp archives, it's always made me laugh to see you Yanks complaining about having to spend another $20 on a harp - those same models cost us about double over here in the UK. So fellow Limeys, save money today - buying just 2 Special 20s from Pappy J is enough to cover the shipping charge, save yerself some pennies and support a site that stops you getting anything done while you're at work...

I just got my cheque back from Pappy, it turns out the bank in USA won't cash a UK cheque without demanding more than it is worth. So I'm going to have to overcome my distrust of electronic money and do it that way.

Just a word of warning about shipping from the US to the UK. About 18 months ago I ordered some harps from C2C and with shipping and duty, they worked out about the same as in the UK. I was happy to buy from C2C so it didn't matter, but I didn't save anything by doing that. The best was when a work colleague was in the US. I ordered and got them sent to his hotel and he brought them back. That was a deep saving.

And why do harps cost twice as much in the UK? Especially as they are made in Germany. And CDs? And …?

On the other hand, anyone, be he prince or pauper, can receive extensive, expensive, medical treatment, surgery and medication, at little or no cost; indeed, for (very roughly) two thirds of the population, it is absolutely free regardless of means.

There might be a link.

It's all probably roundabouts and swings, and a matter of priorites!
