Best female blues voice?

Postby chillywilly » Tue Nov 13, 2001 5:09 am

Spliff had a good idea on his best blues male voice posting.
How about females, too? I mentioned a couple of women under Spliff's post, but have to amend that. My favorite is actually Katie Webster although I've only heard one song: "Pussy Cat Moan", but it is a killer! Ya gotta check that one out. Woman can flat out sing. It's on Alligator Records latest compilation CD.

I heard something by Maria Muldaur recently that sounded great. However that's her only song that I heard.

Check out Maria on Gatemouth Brown's "Long way Home" LP. It was one of my favorite CD's until it got ripped off. I plan to replace it as soon as I can find a used copy. Shes on 3 cuts and they're great. Quite a strech from her "Midnight at the Oasis" days.

might as well mention E.C. SCOTT while I'm at it. A LOT of talent!

went down to the crossroads......

Got to agree with that! I saw her at the National Folk Festival this past August and she did the same thing...must be a regular part of her show. Had NO problem hearing her, the crowd went nuts!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON May-28-02 AT 10:30 AM (CST)]Good thread...

I'll jump in with Big Mama Thornton and Big Maybelle, who both kicked the bejeezus out of anything they did, and while Koko Taylor's no slouch, the sometimes overly-antiseptic production of Alligator's material leaves a lot to be desired. If they'd record her with the same reckless abandon they used when cutting Hound Dog Taylor, I'd think that would be the way to hear Koko.
