Right Hand Technique

Postby doctor cdog » Thu Jun 09, 2005 12:22 am

I usually play bass by plucking with four fingers, but recently I have started using a pick, and I like the sharper sound I get. The pick is used in SRV's version of Voodoo Chile (Slight Return), so I tried it to play that song. I am not sure what other types of songs it would sound cool on, though.

Has anyone else experimented with right handed techniques and found different ones better for different types of blues (or other) songs? I am curious to hear what people have learned.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Jun-09-05 AT 07:02 PM (EST)]This probably won't be any help at all...but Lemmy from Motorhead always uses a pick. I hope that won't get me kicked off.

Thru the years many have used a pick on the bass. I have tried a pick before but the hardness of it just doesn't suit me, even when I was playing rock. I use my index and middle finger on bass. It feels like I have more control over the strings usin' them fingers. I also think I can move the sound better and faster than I can with a pick. I also play electric guitar of which I use my finger, thumb and 3 fingers. When I try to use a pick I feel so restricted. My fingers can pull up alot better melodies than I even have been able to with a pick, be it bass or guitar.

But I think it's what ever works for you.
Times change, music changes, if it feels right & makes the music feel good. It's more about the groove anyway.
Just the opinion of an old bass player of 40 years or so.
Play the blues.

Thanks guys, for the input. I am finding that I can't play nearly as smoothly when I use a pick. I have to look at my right hand to make sure I am not hitting the wrong string, but that would probably get better with practice.

I am not sure I like the sound, but the jury is still out for me.
