A discussion of techniques, and equipment for guitar. Fretted, bottleneck or slide, acoustic or electric, this is the place.

in my quest for sustain, my fretless sucked last night.

Last night I took my fretless to a public blues jam last night. This was the first time I took this ax to a public event. And I had a couple problems.

1. In an attempt to get the thing to sustain I put a hot humbucker in it, I boosted my gain on my SuperSonic 60 and then I brought my Zendrive 2 od pedal. Even without the Zen the audience said I sound like a heavy metal slide player. Over the top distortions and then with the pedal total over the top.
This is NOT what I wanted, I just wanted sustain.
I'm at a loss today as to how to get sustain without sounding like Van Halen or Pantara.

Any suggetions? Like compression! I've never been a fan of it but if it fixes my problem. I don't know, what do I do.

Well it ain't leaving the house till these issues are figured out.

Fretless is cool because you can fine tune with it, but the mushy end of a finger sort of counters the efforts and last night some my non slide licks that I played could have been better tunes, destination slides are easy compared to what needed in one position.
So let's see here,
tone last night sucked
Intonation was not as good as I do at home
Those two items is enough to put it back in the practise pit.

I'm lots better with a fretted guitar at this point and my friends let me know.
It's a work in progress.
