The local blues jam reality show, your weekly update

Postby Clifford D » Fri Jan 11, 2013 3:40 pm

My local blues jam scene is pretty big and fragmented, clics.
Being just north of San Francisco in Sonoma County the jams are fat with
good players and weekend warriors both. Unfortunately the well managed pro jam
is not happening right now but the open local jams can be lots of fun and good rooms
to play.
Open jams invite all kinds of people, some major ego based players, some are beginners
or simplistic and will never be Jimi, but that's ok because it's about friendship, right?
Not always, ego can play much havoc for some, those that feed off of being the "cock of the walk".

The local blues jams are always interesting, worthy of updates from time to time.

Talk about your local blues community and the local blues jam.

If you love these blues, tell it like it is.

I don't go to open jams any more. I occasionally attend open mics where my musical acquaintances are playing.
I've been going to a "closed jam" at a host's house for the last 10 years or so. It's the same bunch of players every week, with the exception of occasional guests.

We play alotta different genres. I'm pretty much responsible for keepin' the blues flame burnin' with my harp and keyboards, but we play mostly old rock, blues/rock, folk/rock, and some newer rock-- plus a good smattering of originals from 3 of our guys.

I drive about 42 miles each way to play, and we meet every Tuesday nite for about 3 hours.
We occasionally "play out" at local bars and civic events, but mostly it's a serious jam fueled by some external motivators and general hilarity.
I value the opportunity alot, and it keeps me motivated to work on tunes during the week, and keeps my chops up.
