The Delta Twelve - 12-string resonator guitar!

Postby bottleneckjohn » Sun May 13, 2012 8:49 pm

Guys, I finally took the time and found the guts to modify a 6-str resonator into a 12-stringer..!!
Been a dream for a while, I really LOVE the 12-str sound, got some acoustics with 12 and they're nice but a metal body reso have been my goal..

Check it out here:

I think the headstock looks right, I made it longer and cut new slots..

Played two gigs with it so far and it works fine on stage, both totally acoustic as well as played into a mic.

Very nice! The tone is nice and crisp, not muddied. That can be a real challenge playing slide with a 12. I suppose paying close attention to the depth of the notches in the Nut and Saddle helps keep the height equal on the string pairs. (That, and good technique.) Sounds great, as always.

Thanks, Jake! New light gauge strings keep it bright and clear, I like this tone too! :D
It's a challenge sure, but also some great new tonal options like playing the fat string only sometimes (upstrokes).

Gonna be fun to play this one a lot from now on!

Ahhh, another one of us bitten the 12 strin bug.

Very, very cool. Tune it down two whole steps and launch into some Blind Willie or Curley Weaver. Just a little slice of heaven here on earth.

Hi John, you are a true artist, always pushing outside the square. How did you extend the peghead to accomodate the extra six tuners? You casually say you "made it longer". Any trade secrets...? The reso 12 would be a mighty beast for full chords - she'd just about shake herself to bits, I imagine. Well done, John. :D Peace

Ricbleu, here's some clues to how I did this, a very simple mod..
Thanks for digging my ideas too, the 12'er turned out so cool!!

I did take a few pics when I worked on the mod, the work was absolutely nothing fancy!!!

And hey, I'm not a luthier in any way!!!!! :wha:

Just a few tools, pieces of mahogany, glue and a LOT of inspiration and determination, lol...

Image
Adding length here, slots are longer as well in this photo! Yes, it's the family kitchen table used for a work bench, haha! I was home alone for a day so I had to work quick!!!!

Image
A new nut and you can see where the slots have been modified, the lighter wood is newly cut, dark parts show how long the slots used to be..

Image
Mahogany veneer glued on to cover the mod and give a uniform colour.. :)
Yes, the trussrod is hidden from now on but no worries, I don't use it.. And if I have to some day I'll make it happen... :)

Done, gotta play!!!!!!!
So, there it is folks! Simple stuff done by sheer will, haha!
