Blues songs about people

Postby farmaz » Tue Jun 08, 2010 3:26 pm

there are a few names that seem to pop up quite often in blues tunes. The ones i checked out are John Henry (the steel driving man) Stack o' Lee are the only ones i can call off the top of my head right away but i got a list i did to remember others i was going to ask but i left it on the bus like a idiot :(

anyone know of any more & also are the people real of is it just folk law (but im quite sure john henry was real)

So was Stagger Lee (and several other variations of his name.)

Don't forget Bo Diddley! Just about every song he sang he managed to slip in his own name for some shameless self-promotion!

Stack o' Lee (or Stagger Lee) is supposed to be based upon a real person.

Not just supposed, actually based on.
For an in-depth account of Shelton's story and the song's development etc. read Stagolee Shot Billy.

I just read this cool little tome. This is an easier and more entertaining read than Brown's book, it isn't really an academic work like Brown's. It's in Graphic Novel form and I know some people hold preconceptions about reading comic books, but I really think the time is past when anyone can reasonably hold the position that "comics are just for kids," so I'm recommending Stagger Lee here. Highly, in every legally acceptable interpretation  8)

Aint he the guy who used to play with son house & died & that made son house give up the guitar till the 60's when he was found in NYC working on the rail road?.......

Also there are another 2 guys i would like to find out about, they were 2 levee camp men called Mr Johnny & Mr dunlow jones, i heard them in several songs by son house & robert pete williams, they allways come up in levee camp hollers or songs about working in levee camps. Do the names ring any bells with people?
