found a new jam session close to home...

Problems, how to get them, favorite songs to play, groupies, funky bar owners, etc. NO names of clubs, please.

found a new jam session close to home...

Postby stewie » Tue Nov 10, 2009 2:20 am

A pub close to my place has just started a weekly jam night/open mic on Monday's. They have a good, professional band hosting it so if turn up by yourself you can jam with them, or if you have some songs you want to do with other people they step aside. It's been a good crowd so far with a nice assortment of instruments, and so far everyone has been really friendly and no one has any ego problems or tries to upstage anyone else - just good fun playing music. The pub is doing it as a six week trial and then they'll see if they want to continue. Hopefully they will and as word gets around we hope more people will show up. It's been a good way to meet some new people to play with - within a couple weeks I was invited to join another jam session on Wednesday nights!

Hey, that's great Stewie! Good jam sessions are to be highly valued: they're not that common. The networking opportunities are invaluable. Many a band has morphed its way outa those jams. I hope it takes off for ya'.

Where is home? Did you tell us? If it's close enough in the UK, I might lurch through the door one of the days. I'd need swimming lessons before I thought about tackiling America though.

Unfortunately it's in New Zealand - just about as far from the UK as you can get without leaving the planet! :D

The manager of the pub decided to pull the plug on the jam session after only four weeks :( The turnout wasn't great and they weren't pulling enough pints to make it worth paying a band to host it. The management didn't advertise the jams very well which probably explains the low turnout. They're looking at starting again in February as a monthly thing instead of weekly and actually advertising it properly so maybe it work out. Oh well, met some new people there and now have some more people to jam with!

Work those leads Stewie; most of the times that I've hooked up with new players have been credited to actively networking. I'll play jams, or sit in with bands, in areas outside my normal circles strictly for networking purposes. Best wishes.

Thanks Jeff. I was already asked by someone at the jams if I was interested in forming a small 4-piece combo in the new year. Since I'm planning on stepping away from the band I'm currently in after Christmas it could be good timing. Only thing is that with the way the band has been going for the last few months I'm a bit soured on the whole band idea at the moment. I'm sure that will change at some point and it's just a matter of finding the right people, the right environment and the right music to play.

Yeah Stewie... ain't there always gonna be the good and the bad...? Good deals can go bad, and bad deals can go good. Sometimes, after a bad band deal, it's a good time to hole up and do some woodsheddin' and see which way your interests lead you. It's a good time to knock down some techniques you've struggled with, or take the negative energy and turn it into some original tunes. And then there's the time honored tradition of hittin' the basement with some new guys and practicin' for about a month to see if it works....
