A little update on my amp situation. I stumbled into GC today after class and played through a Valve Jr. just for fund. I asked the guy if they hand any used cabinets. Much to my surprise they had a 2x12, home-made cab for $250. The inside was fairly well built and it looked like it was not laminate wood.

The cab was covered in purple tolex and had a black grill cloth. Pretty ugly, IMO, but I was curious. I asked the guy to take the back off so I could see what speakers were in it. It has two 12 Warehouse Guitar Speakers, which I have never heard of before. Have any of you guys heard of them? I don't remember the exact model of the speakers but the back looked like this. http://warehousespeakers.com/prodimages/HM75_big2.jpg A lot of their backs look like that. Anyways, they wanted $250, which I would not pay, but I know I could talk 'em down if I paid in cash.

I plugged a Champ 600 into the no-name cab and jammed for a while. It sound really, really good. The speakers sounded pretty beefy. They have a tight high end with a really loose low end. I liked it pretty well with the Champ 600 but it still did not impress me as much as the Vox AC4TV and Bandmaster cab. I plugged the VJ head into the cab as well and jammed on it for a while too. It seemed a little louder than the Champ 600 but the tone was pretty muddy. The VJ and the no-name combo also didn't impress me as much as the Vox/Bandmaster either.

I might pick up this cab if I can learn more about the speakers. I know I can talk em down too.

On a side note, does anyone know a place that just sells cabinets without speakers?

WGS makes good speakers. Fairly inexpensive. though over the past couple of years their prices have gone up substantially. Still, cheaper than buying Celestions. Once you break them in you'll be pleased with the sound.

Other speakers to consider are the Eminence line. I like the Cannabis Rex. Great blues tone. They offer many others and they are in a similar price range.

Who makes cabinets?

Seismic Audio - Cheapest I've seen and know nothing about their cabs. They do offer decent cables, snakes and drivers which is how I know about the company.

Of course, there are others but these are the ones I've heard except for seismic.

Thanks for those links!

Have you ever used the GWS speakers? How do you feel about them? I'm thinking about grabbing this cab, but I'm still wary about it because I don't know much about the speakers. I'd never heard of them before yesterday.

What's your opinion on getting this cab if I can talk them down?

Lefty, check out www.davesguitar.com. hit the used amps link. He's got an old Torres modded Fender, as well as some other pretty good buys. The guy's a very reputatable dealer, with about 85% of his business coming through international internet sales. Their staff is real knowledgeable and professional. I always stop in there to check their small used amp inventory.

I've used the Veteran 30 in a friends cab. Sounded a tad smoother than a celestion but had a "barky" or "bitey" quality to it if that makes any sense to you. Bottom seemed a little thin. Could've been just the cabinet too (closed back - no ports).

Getting which cab? I suppose it doesn't matter because the first two are manufacturers (you might get a deal on a blem) and seismicaudio is a retailer. I think your chance of talking them down is pretty slim. But you might be able to get a demo unit or a blem at a discount. Craigslist is usually a decent source for speakers and cabs. If you look around the Seismicaudio site you'll see that he offers a 2x12 cab loaded. He offers 3 models of 2x12 and his cheapest one is $174.99 with FREE shipping. Here's a link: http://www.seismicaudiospeakers.com/212 ... sa-212.htm
His highest price one is $15.00 more than his cheapest. Here: http://www.seismicaudiospeakers.com/212 ... 212pro.htm

Here's an "odd" one from celestion called a "Rocket 50". I won't swear to it but the specs make it seem like it is the speaker used in some of the Crate 4x12 cabs and other less expensive cabs. Anyway, the reviewers seem happy with it and the price is certainly right especially if you buy 4:

Speakers/cabs are a matter of personal taste. Just remember...Sound before beauty and you get what you pay for. Cheap is good but good tone is better (and usually more costly)
