Outside help.

Hello,
when playing gigs I tense up,usually my shoulders can end up near my ears.
Here is an excercise which is used in the car.

"Draw double chins"
Draw you chin into your neck but don't allow your head to droop,no nodding for example ,and no pushing your head back towards the headrest,you should feel a pull at collar level.

I try and"push"my spine out of my back in the above excercise.

If poss I do stretching before a gig, shoulder rolls and side torso twists,I don't do anything with my hands aside from playing a couple of tunes before a gig..as I think that the ligaments etc are best stretched by playing.

There was the gig when, totally shredded, a coupla tokes on a roach were thought a good idea...

Don't know if they were - but others seemed to enjoy what I did (whatever it was... It was a yogurt-weavers den, so it could've been anything).

nice to see you back from your American trip ...

This about drink and playing as a relaxer..it don't work for me.

I get into the "Joe Cocker " mode..y'know that silent scream in
"little help from my friends" which everyone fiils in in their mind.I do that ..after a few scoops the brain sends messages and the hands don't get it...

It was almost enlightening, but really quite predictable.

One thing topical (or typical?) is that the biggest selling "recreational" car this week is a Humvee! (In pastel colours, of course - the machine guns are optional, but in any mail order catalogue, or on any street corner...)

We missed your wit and worldly aptitude, but certainly not your anti-colonial attitude.

Funny thing is, aside from the occasional Clapton jab, which is a musical debate and doesn't even count, I can't recall anyone on the BigRoad bashing the UK for sport.

Well, in referance to Lovat's original post...

I've been involved in a course of Alexander Method lessons for several years now...focusing especially on not holding tension in the shoulders, and in executing everyday tasks (like playing the guitar) without twisting myself up too much.

Useful stuff.

Hello Lummo X ,
what are the top three Alexander gtr tips then...as I'm sure that in tensing up I am cutting off blood supply,nerual paths,oxygen and building up a toxic lactic loop.

So any help would be good ....I suspect if I loosen up this tension deth speed metal maybe in my grasp!

Ry Cooder says in interview in the"Sweetwater" session with JLH that shaking JLH's mitt is like shaking a piece of meat with no bone in it cos he is so relaxed.

Well, the core notion in Alexander comes down to keeping your neck free...and letting your arms and legs just hang loose from he shoulders and hips.

I'd really recommend a couple of sessions...the instructor points ad pokes and shows you just where the tension is sitting in a way that makes it possible to correct bad old habits you didn't know you had...
