Harps going through the airport

Always carry your harps in your carry-on bag. Especially on an international flight. Expect it to be hand searched every time at every check point. Don't ask why. The security folks are not supposed to answer that question. My guese is that on the x-ray screen your bag looks like it is filled with a dozen odd looking cell phones. Now what kind of a person would be traveling with a dozen cell phones? Here in Iraq cell phones are used to set off Improvised Explosive Devices AKA, road-side bombs. Don't make a fuss at the security check point. Just dump them out, blow a short riff and you will be on your way.

It's more likely that they look like loaded handgun magazines...

Being British, I have only limited knowledge of handgun magazines - limited to the few occasions when I've seen local hoods fixing them into their illegal firearms! But I'm fully prepared to bet that those bad guys couldn't get as good a tune out of them as some of the good guys here can get out of a real harp ;)

You can't get a tune out of them. They're not a melody instrument, they're a percussion instrument.

Now...if you have a REALLY big one, it works great in "The 1812 Overture".

Yeah, and while we're on that subject, don't forget to vacuum out your harp case, if you ever put any herbal contraband in it, or whatever. You wanna see a delay....!

I had a friend that made it through three international airports (including Heathrow) with a small bag of pot in his pocket. He found it in the car ride home from the local airport while fishing for a slip of paper that he'd remembered was there...

whoops!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Nov-08-04 AT 09:14 AM (EST)]I brought 4 harps (and a Shakuhachi style Flute) with me this trip and had no troubles at all.

I was a little surprised at how quickly we got through security coming back into the States this time ... I was prepared to wait patiently through long lines, but it was the quickest I've seen in a few years.

I would imagine that it would have been different coming in from the Middle East, though.

Actually, I get hassled a lot less at the airport since I started wearing my hair short...

But you know what? I get enough crap from the old Hippies in Berkeley when I show up with short hair and a jacket and tie to make up for all the cops that ever bothered me when I had long hair. At least the cops never tried to bore me to death.
