Tabs I've seen for some of the Robert Johnson non-slide songs have stretches in them that will almost dislocate your pinky.

Of course, did you ever look closely at his (or Hendrix's) fingers?

one thing I have noticed is that when I really get into what i'm playing, my hands develop a mind of their own and decide for themselves which finger goes where (usually all fingers come alive at this point).

When i was was around 20 yrs old...i cut my knuckle on my index finger on my left hand and had it bandaged and braced for around 2 months.
and of course..my band had a gig in a few weeks..lol
so i crammed to re-learn all our songs with the 3 fingers i had left...
and for a few months following...i did everything without my index finger and used my pinkie finger as i normally would use my ring finger.
and i swear...to this day, my lil finger on my left is 2x the diameter of the one on my right and alot more agile.
its always handy to have all 4 fingers in full control then to have one half dead lazy finger curled up there imo..lol
it's worth it in the long run to train it, even if you have to tape up your index for a while ;=)

Can't play slide or fingerstyle without my pinky.
I used to put the slide on my ring finger but the tricone's 12th fret is just out of ring finger reach so had to swap and use my pinky. Took a while to get comfortable with that. I also use it a lot for fretting, hammering on, pulling off and bending notes in F and G chords although on 12 gauge strings bending does need some strength in that little digit.
Cashno uses 13 gauge and bends notes, now that is something!

Even with the slide on my pinky I still clout the tricone occasionally when sliding to the 12th fret!
Makes a horrible clunk, totally distracting.
