Damage of my most important equiptment

Postby sleepy » Mon Dec 27, 2004 9:42 pm

Hey everyone, I'm kind of new here and I really don't know everyone. I just want to share one of my most major equiptment problems with all of you. I have rhematoid arthritis which causes my fingers to swell up and give me a hell of a lot of pain. And it's especially bad during the winter months when it gets colder, so you'll see me posting a lot in here when I can't be playing. So I was just wondering if any of you guys have hand/finger ailments and how you get around them. I usually tune my guitar down a whole step and a half (I use heavy ass strings so I can get away with it) to make playing a bit easier. And when it gets too bad I just screw around on drums or harp or something thats not so demanding on my hands.

Several people on here have gotten interested in slide playing due to hand injuries or ailments.

I feel for you Sleepy. I don't have it as bad as you do yet, but arthritis is showing up more and more in a few places, including my hands. That goes with my wrist problems (probably carpal tunnel issues) from years of typing/keyboarding -- already had to give up mountain biking and kayaking. Crazy time to get back to playing guitar, huh? But actually, I think the regular practice may help me maintain mobility by limbering the joints. Sometimes I can't play for very long, and other days I can go for quite a while. Up until now, I've avoided taking any pain relievers/anti-inflammatories (I guess that'll keep me out of the class-action lawsuits now mobilizing, lol).

Rest and then variety in hand movements (to avoid repetitive stress making matters worse -- a good excuse to try different scales, runs and progressions than you usually do) would be my only suggestions. When it comes to when or whether to add heat, compresses, medication, etc., I'll defer to medical professionals or at least those with more personal experience than I have at the moment. For now, I'm just going to try to get as much fun out of my guitars as I can before my flesh and bone give out on me for good.

Diet can also be a factor. I was advised to cut down on dairy products a few years back, after a painful arthritic condition in a previously broken wrist. I've found that to be very good advice, and never suffer in the same way any more.

And now the rest of us suffer by having to endure yer playin' again!

Sorry mate, you know I'm just kidding...I couldn't resist jumping on that one. :D

What happened to DF Duck?

There are, indeed, several here who play slide because of injuries or just general maladies of aging.

DF plays almost exclusively lap style now because of his hand and joint pains. Make connection with him and you might get some tips on trying that route.

Badfinger rigged himself up a special thumb brace at one time.

Sleepy,
I also developed problems with my hands a couple of years ago. I find that playing mostly in open tunings seems to help, I also have backed off on my playing time-hate it, but it seems to help. I've found some exercises on a website called "musicianshealth.com" and have been doing them for several months now, can't really say whether they are helping or not though, maybe you could check it out.
Just my 2 cents,

Everything from stress levels to diet can be factors in arthritis.

However, and this is no joke, medical studies have PROVEN that having sex temporarily alleviates symptoms of arthritis.

One of the chemicals released (during orgasm, as I recall) is an analgesic (sp?), so it also helps with headaches, menstrual cramps, etc. Who needs Ibuprofen?
