i always called it the 3 frets back trick. Im an ear tabber and first learned it way back in the late 70's while figuring out Creams
Sunshine of your love.

The solo changes from D pents to B and I only knew how to do it by ear. I never put any thought into it other then to throw it into my solos and knew wheni heard it while figuring out songs on the 45's and cassettes

later on, years later on i leanred that it was major pents.

T Bone, otis rush, Buddy guy, SRV, EC and countless other blues greats do it all day long
