Mistaken Identity

Postby dcblues » Thu Jan 19, 2006 8:33 pm

Since Decemeber I've had a regular gig at a local barbecue joint that features live music several nights a week. This is a new acoustic trio, and when we first started playing it we didn't have a name. Our bass player came up with the name The Shack Shakers. I liked the name but something seemed wrong about it. I realized that there's a national act called The Legendary Shack Shakers.

The restaurant has a website. They have us on their schedule with a link to The Legendary Shack Shakers website. Twice we have had people come expecting to see the other band (and last night a group expecting to see them liked us and stayed). I don't mind being mistaken for them since it's a band I like led by a great harp player. I wonder if we'll get a cease and desist order from their attorneys.

Since the name is not technically the same you should be OK. I would tell the restaurant to take the link off of their website though, as that leads people on and misrepresents who you are.

Is the name "Mistaken Identity" taken? It has a cool ring and you even a story behind it...

A nod to history and the Mississippi Sheiks - The Shack Sheiks. Terrible I know, but not far removed from your current identity.

I remember we named a 3 piece blues band "King B".
After a few months and a dozen or so gigs we found out about another "King B" playing the same circuit as us.
They'd had the name for over a year, but our drummer insisted on fightin' 'em for it.
I mean "fightin'", if it came down to it.
I could not be bothered, even though I don't mind a good stoush!
I changed the name to "Steam Roller".
I don't ever want to be confused with someone else.
If things get too hot, you could change the name to "Shake n Bake"!

"Mistaken Identity" sounds like a "lite jazz" wedding band.

The Accoustic Mojo Men sounds kind of cool.

I don't think our female singer/guitarist would like to be called a Mojo Man.

Personally, I'd like to see you try to attract an audience by calling yourselves The Quakers.
