When I was in a 50's band for a brief time in college, I wore my hair greased back (gel now) and a sleeveless T-shirt with a button down vest over it, and a fake tattoo on my arm: a heart that said "mom" in it. If I wore that get-up now, I'd look like one of the older hoodlums that used to prowl my neighborhood when I was growing up. I gotta admit..I think costumes can be fun, but there's a very fine line where poor taste can get in the way of the music. The 80's "hair bands" and their stage costumes look ridiculous to me now, and in some way kept me from taking their glam rock, with its headbanging and rock anthems, seriously. There were some very talented bands from that period, but I just missed the whole decade.

They were ridiculous then.

THAT's why I spent the eighties in Blues bands.

I spent the 80s in t-shirt and jeans playing thrash metal in an underground band :)
