What do you wear at gigs?

Problems, how to get them, favorite songs to play, groupies, funky bar owners, etc. NO names of clubs, please.

Richard...must be that small spot of Scottish blood I have in me, but I love a man in a kilt! You all look really polished in the above pic.

And, congrats on the "new you", it's REALLY hard to quit the food addiction--or any addiction for that matter.

Just out of curiosity, what do all you gentlemen think a blues lady should wear to gigs??

Speaking of the ladies, I went to a local blues fest about 15 years ago, and the opening band (don't remember their name) had a lady lead guitarist. She was wearing a "little house on the prairie" dress, modest pony tail... strapped on a black strat, and blew us all away. She was just a little thing...wish I would have taken note of her name, as good as she was, she's gotta be making it big somewhere now. I'll never forget the image, she was so cool.

Hi everyone!

I also used to think that the look wasn't important, wearing jeans and t-shirt... until some blues agency woman came to talk to us after a gig and said that our music was wonderful but the show was '#####'. Either we improved the look and the show or they would never work with us.

Well, we did and the results are good: we got into festivals and better clubs.

Now I think that what is important is not to dress up, but to look the part. That means that you must find your artist image. It can be sharp and dress up or wearing a pyjama and a sac around the head (if your band's name is the sleepy barking potatoes, why not?).

Jeans, t-shirt and a baseball cap are good... if you are already famous and don't give a damm about your image, because you don't need that anymore. Nevertheless, unknown bands need to give something extra to the public. Something to impress them, on top of the good music. Otherwise, why would any festival book you?

Hi Grady: Have you checked the cost of dry cleaning lately? Around here, it is about $30-40 a suit, and one can easily need it cleaned after every gig! That could be 1/2 night earnings for many mid level touring blues bands.

I switched over to tux's full time a few years ago. I learned playing with Wilbert Harrison, how to get them cheap. You go to the local tux rental places, and ask to buy the old stuff. These are usually in great shape, and out of date, so you stand out more. Wilbert would mix colors of tuxes, shirts, and ties, to get wild combinations. Back then, they had pink, blue, green, yellow, red, orange, and purple tuxes! Man I miss those days.

one of the Wilbert purchases, with Louisiana Red and my longtime bassist, Jamie Greenan, in Belguim

Now all I can find is white and black. Anyway, I can get a complete tux- including patent leather shoes, shirt, tie, cumberbund/vest, cufflinks, hankerchief, for about $100. I get the all polyester ones because they wash in the washer, and need no ironing. Tux shops dry clean everything, and wine, tomato sauce, and stains like that, don't come out. I was taught to buy amway stain remover. It will take anything out. I bought the white tux in my recent pictures for $100(complete) because it was stained. It was also brand new!

Walter has gotten me in a nostalgic mood.

Here are a couple of "live" pics from days gone by...

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y270/B ... ds4crr.jpg
At a bar called Fud's West. This was a fun gig.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y270/B ... house1.jpg
Playing some electric slide at a now defunct roadhouse called "The Lighthouse". It was out in the sticks on US Hwy 80 right on the Texas state line. And I mean RIGHT on the line. Part of it was in Louisiana, part in Texas. They could serve up the drinks in which ever state was more advantagious at the time...given local drinking ordinances and so forth.

I've posted more band pics - and a few studio pics - here, if anyone's interested...

Some of those go WAY back.
