What do you wear at gigs?

Problems, how to get them, favorite songs to play, groupies, funky bar owners, etc. NO names of clubs, please.

I've seen big-Name Artists like Buddy Guy play a gig in Bib Overalls.

I don't think that dressing up is an absolute necessity by no means.

After a recent run-in with a big-name band that was very dressed up but obviously hadn't taken a bath in a while,,,the Dressed up thing doesn't impress me much.

Stink is stink no matter how you slice it,,,or smell it.

Clothes don't make the Musician,,,,the music does.

and Body Odor,,,,well,,,that's something that the finest Men's Wear cannot cover up.

I also remember going to see Bob Margolin & his Band in the 80's many times and they always looked like they had been lying in a ditch somewhere for a week.

Dirty clothes with a zillion wrinkles in them.
Just basically very nasty looking.

I personally like the way that RL Burnside,,Jr. Kimbrough,,Fred McDowell dressed for gigs.
Nothin' fancy,,,they weren't "puttin' on airs" but,,,the Music was Top-Notch.

I realize that a lot of people see the fancy clothes and say "Oooooh" but,,,some people see it as being fake as hell.

As always,,,there's more than one,,two or three ways to look at any subject.

My advice is,,,wear what you want,,,as long as it's clean and doesn't stink.
and more importantly,,,make sure that you don't stink.

But,,,most important of all,,,,,make the music good,,,,because,,,I don't care what you wear,,,,it ain't gonna help if your Music isn't up to "par".

How about: Be authentic. If authentic for you means dressing to the nines, do it. If it means bib overalls, do it.

Remember the old saying: Sincerity is the most important thing; if you can fake that you can accomplish anything.

Wear what feels good! That is what will add to your shine. I dress up because it always makes me feel good.

On a funny note, I was playing with Lightning Hopkins, and they had a band opening. These guys were members of various big name rock bands, in the NYC area, and were dressed in dirty, worn out jeans, wrinkled, old shirts, stubble on their faces, and thier hair in all states of disary. Lightning leaned over to me, wearing his custom blue suit, with lightning bolts on the pants, gold rings, beautiful straw hat, and asked, "do these guys need some $? They look awful bad." I laughed, and told him, with their other bands, they make more in one song, than he did in a year! Lightning just shook his head, said nothing, and went back to his drink, looking as perplexed as if he saw a alien walk in. Walter

I don't think any kind of uniform should be compulsory

Of course it's not compulsory, wear whatever you want to wear. I just know that I've invested way too many years, dollars and too much sweat in my music to hit the stage dressed like a slob and still call myself a professional entertainer. There's about 15 bands wrestling for 5 gigs in my area, and I can guarantee that the bands the present the best total entertainment package, (music, lights, sound, dress) are going to get those jobs.

I've got a problem with authority, so I have a hard time
with someone that tells me how I "have" to dress, or what's
"appropriate" attire. That's a little MORE than a little
presumptuous. I understand if the people that start and run
a band decide what will be appropriate dress for their
shows, that's fine with me, but when they take the attitude
that someone else dresses INappropriately, that's crossing
the line. Boorish behavior at best.

Well, everyone sees things differently...and that's what makes the forum interesting and an opinion an opinion. No one tells me how I have to dress either, I do it as a matter of personal choice. Having invested a large portion of my life in my music, and knowing the show business history of this region, there is no way I'm going to hit the lighted stage on a Saturday night in front of a packed house waiting to be entertained wearing a baseball hat, tee shirt and blue jeans. Now to me, THAT would be presumptuous and boorish.

A Mississippi juke joint, a brewpub in Sheffield and an upscale nightclub halfway between Detroit and Chicago are miles apart my friends. Maybe it's not a coincidence that our viewpoints are miles apart as well.

Hello,
I hold to walter's "don't dress like your audience"..but I need loose shirts as I lose a few pounds each gig.

What abides with me is that in the Blues "revival" of the 60's European audiences just wouldn't accept Fred or Big Bill unless they had that down home bib+braces stage gear on.

Fred tried it on his first tour Image

And then came back in spandex for the next tour.

And this is tooo cool ...Fred in NY.

adios,

...Now....Nobody said anything about upscale! They won't let me in those places on account of how I dress. ;)

Hi again !!

How about this ?

Image

Me at a Hogmanay party (New Year's Eve 2003) in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Before ANYONE mentions anything about skirts etc etc, the guy on the left is wearing a KILT ! Guy on the left in Tartan trouse.

After dieting for 18 months, I had lost 53 pounds in weight (over 3.5 stone) and I had just bought this DJ earlier that day. My first new suit in my new super slim body. Boy, I felt like James Bond that night !!!
