I'm goin' to a jam tonite that I've never been at before. It's a benefit for Southeast Minnesota flood victims. Apparently they've had this benefit for 30 years now, and every year they pick another beneficiary. I have no idea who's gonna be there or what the deal is, but it's in the town where I do most of my playin' these days, so I figure there might be some guys there I know. Otherwise, I'll be meetin' some new players hopefully. I'm kinda lookin' forward to it. If the jam's been goin' for 30 yrs., there must be some older players like myself, which prob'ly increases the chance that they'll be playin' tunes that I know. At any rate, how can ya' beat a jam on the shores of the Mississippi....?

Yeah, it turned out to be alotta fun. The lineup during the night rotated a little; two or three drummers a few bass players, but the music got better as the night wore on, and they welcomed me with open arms. The players were mostly in their 50's, except for one or two, and they had a coupla dynamite guitarists, and one great trumpet player. One bassist and one drummer were particularly wonderful to play with; they actually took the time to build a groove on a few tunes when some new players stepped up. I was the only harper, so I played alot and everything worked well. Most of the guys who played have been doin' it since the beginning 30 yrs. ago. They had a real nice horn section (which I was happy to join at times) and a couple female backup singers who got in on a number of the R&B tunes. They were too loud though. I had my 5-watt Epi Valve Special cranked jus' about all the way, and it had trouble runnin' outa headroom on a couple tunes. I finally took a chance as the newcomer and said somethin' to the jam leader, and he agreed that it had gotten too loud and they backed it off a little. That was nice. They went outa their way to invite me back for next year, so it was all cool.
