Where might I find...?

Postby bignick » Tue Jan 20, 2009 4:09 am

I've got an old Kingston 12 string. It is a flattop with a floating bridge and one of those old jazzy looking tailpieces.

The neck has actually been broken off the guitar and was repaired rather well. I just use it for sliding but the floating bridge needs replacing.

Anyone know where I could locate a 12-string floating bridge for a flattop?

I hope not man. lol

There are a lot of these old parlors and stuff floating around. Maybe there is a luthier that makes one somewhere? Anyone know of someone who does this?

Any luthier or halfway decent guitar fix-it guy ought to be able to make a bridge.

Maybe you could just take any bridge that is wide enough and make a 12 string saddle to sit on top of it.
That is if you don't require a mechanical thing with thumbwheel adjustability.
A piece of bone or antler or melamite would do for a saddle.
You would have to have some very tiny little files to make the slots.
Or if no such files are available you could burn the slots with a hot knife or wire, then use sandpaper to deburr and smoothen. But beware burning bone or antler stinks pretty badly.

Oh god, it's terrible.

Nick, have you checked ebay? There are usually some pretty nice looking and inexpensive floating bridges you could file to fit 12 strings. Doesn't National make a 12 string reso? Maybe you could order a 12 string saddle from them? You'll probably have to glue it onto the bridge you have maybe.

Nick, call Brain Galloup's guitar school up in Big Rapids. He's one of the best luthiers in the land.

My old band buddies have had numerous setups and mod work (guitar and bass) done by him. His work is superb.
