My G&L makeover! Have a look thus far!

Postby bignick » Mon Jul 28, 2008 3:15 pm

As some of you remember from a previous post, I wanted to paint my G&L Invader. I wanted to turn it from H-S-S to a single humbucker guitar with two pots.

Our own forumite, birddog offered to paint it for me and I have been working with him the last couple of weeks...the basic progression is below and I will keep updating.

The beginning. Bad Relicing. Screw holes everywhere, a ton of knicks from removing stickers...just a mess. Those streaks are scratches, not smudges.

Priming - and it looked like hell when I sent it to him. I stripped it and filled it but the holes were not even because the filler shrank. He had to do a lot of work here. This is after a lot of sanding, priming, and hardening.

Sent this pic to me today and I'm friggin amazed. He has a little bit of buffing to do, but it already looks awesome. I had my pick of any paint I wanted and went with 70s Antique white.

It should be shipping out tomorrow and I can't wait.

Yeah that fretboard is really ebony, and the headstock is going to be black still.

Wally really does great work. I can't wait to post the end result. If anyone needs a paint job - he is totally reasonable and very detailed. This already surpasses what I was originally expecting.

Well it's finished!!! Wally did an incredible job. If you need a guitar repainted...I highly recommend him. I really missed this thing and it sounds better than ever.

Here's a shot of the whole thing, I couldn't get it to appear correctly:

Looks really superb! Congrats on the (somewhat) new axe. What kind of humbucker do you have in there?

When you said you were leaving the headstock black, I was thinking it might look kind of odd, but it looks really great!

I used Kesakae guitar designer to see if it would look alright. I love that program. I planned the whole guitar.

The only thing I am missing is another Kahler Trem. I swapped out the stock one for the Kahler fixed-tail...which I like. But I want it to have a trem again. A black one. All the used ones are going too fast, I'll have to buy new for around $149 which is going to suck. It will be worth it in the end.

I might have to get my hands on that program. It sounds kind of neat.

Wow Nick
That looks great. I see you wasted no time puttin her back together.
Surprised you got delivered yesterday as I didn't get to the post office till about 2pm tuesday to send it out.
I'll send you an e-mail later.
I'm a little tired this morning after going to see Larry McCray last night at our "free" Blues on the Square concerts on thursday nights, Larry always puts on a great show.

What kind of humbucker do you have in there?

It is the stock Schaller humbucker that came in the guitar. It is hot as hell and I love it.

I might have to get my hands on that program. It sounds kind of neat.

You don't have to buy it. It is a Web site:

http://www.nymphusa.com/kisekae/kisekaeE1.asp

Just pick which guitar style you want to design. All the options are there.
