Marshall 2204 head anyone?

Postby texas blues » Sat Jul 05, 2008 5:18 pm

Hey ya'll from the big dry ditch in Las Vegas. I have been looking at Marshall Plexi's of late and I came across a Marshall 2204 50w head. While not a Plexi, as it has a master volume, it does have el34's and has that classic Zep/ZZ/Cream sound in spades. I had a 2210 100w that I dug but could not quite get next to it as the wombat was too bright and overall had issues such as lame channel switching that bled over and crap effects loop. I ended up selling it. The 2204 has no wham whams or zuzu's to get in the way.
Anyone got one? What cab are you using? Likes? Dislikes? All opinions and comments are appreciated. Gracias.

Cheers, TB.

Very cool!

The Pignose G40V is pretty much a clone of that amp, with the cheapest possible Chinese components crammed into a tiny chassis and box.

I had one and loved it. I used it with a 2x12 cab loaded with greenbacks.
Even with the master volume it never sounded great at low volume............but cranked it just killed. I liked it better than the JCM 8oo's they had too much fizzy gain. The 2204 sound more plexi-like.
Oh yeah..........that 50 watts was more than I ever needed.
It sure was fun to crank it up though :D 8)

Rico and Slickcat..I haven't bought the 'thang yet....waiting on the wife/comtroller/scorpion woman/queen of the netherworlds and all that is evil/best friend and sweetheart, to send out an APB approval. Now I hear the 2203 100w is only 3db louder but opens the tone up a little more but I think the 2204 should do the trick.

Slick...the 2210 I had was also overly fizzy and lent itself more to the Texas Chainsaw crowd than Texas boogie. I want the el34 sound with a half stack of 4x Celestion G12M 25w. I think I would still get an attenuator to load the output stage ..which is where the real tone is anyway. I want to be able to crank it without ripping my neighbors heads off...me? I wear earplugs when needed.

Cheers, TB.

Ofcourse I have a different thought, .........I have 2 full stack Marshalls, JCM 900's 8-12s each never use both at the same time, Now everybody wants to think loud!! but the 50/100 can be a beast at 100w, But cut to 50w and with 8/12s and just a touch of sonic stomp and a spoonful of tube screamer creamy tones with a little edge can be had at very low volumes, Ive been recording with this set up all week, If you would like some sound clips of this set up PM me and I will send ya a sample, I use the 1960 A&B cabs,
Now the Marshals , 900...800...and 2204...are very moodie creatures channel switchin can be touchie if not fine tuned at volume levels between A/B channels, however I have 10 amps and each has an issue I don't like,
But I found addin the 8/12s at 50w acts kinda like a hot plate puts enough drain on it at low volume so it has super tones.
But overall the Marshall is my fav amp,I have checked out 100s of different amps, and still in the studio I switch on the Marshall, all said no matter what amp you use, it a matter of gettin used to it and learning how to get the best from it

You really cant go wrong with any Tube Marshall.
My fave are the Plexi reissues.......or of course a real plexi. 8)
I like the old school cranked power tube distortion.

I'm kinda thinkin if I should get 2204 or 1987x reissue. I tred 2204 in my local music shop and I fell in love with that marshall crunch. Too bad that it costs a fortune and I need to buy a cabinet too.

BTW one question is 2204 same as JCM800 or are they two comletely different heads?

JCM 800 is a series. 2204 is a model. It's a JCM 800 Model #2204 Super Lead 50.

Right you are Rico about the JCM series. It is also my feeling that the 2203 100w and 2204 50 were the best of the non combos in that line. Pro workhorses they were and still are. I don't share that same admiration for the 900 series or anything that has come after those amps. It can get rather confusing with the whole JPM,JTM, JVM, JCM mysterioso 'thang goin' on.
Cheers ya'll,
TB.
