A question for you Tube Screamer owners

Postby leftyguitarman » Sat Feb 09, 2008 3:52 am

Which Tube Screamer pedal is the best one? In your opinions, and why. I own no pedals, and would like to start getting some. I've been reading up on Tube Screamers, but I have yet to play through one since I can't seem to find any around here. So which version is the best? The TS-9, the TS808, or the TS9DX?

I haven't played all of them so I can't say, but I do have the TS9DX and like it. There's been some discussion about the other three modes of the DX, and I think I'm going to get it modded, since they all seem to add bass and cut the overdrive. But it's still a usable pedal stock.

I was just reading a back issue of the Tonequest Report, and they recommended the TS-7 as an inexpensive alternative, so you might want to check that one out too.

The thing I had to get used to, after reading so much about Tube Screamers, is that the actual effect is pretty subtle compared to a lot of pedals. I was expecting some magical over-the-top transformation of my sound and that didn't happen. But I like what it does.

If money is an issue, you might also check out the Arion Tubulator, a TS clone. While it's not quite as good, it's only about 15-20 bucks new.

My .02,

I've got the TS9 with mods. It's the only stompbox I use at this time.

I reccomend buying a Boss SD-1 Overdrive (the yellow one). You can get them for $35.00 used. Send it in to Mohomods and have it converted to TS-808 specs. You will have a tubescreamer with more variety. I liked it a lot better than my Tubulator, which I sold after having this done. I think the conversion costs about $25 and he pretty much replaces a lot of the components with new ones and gives you the two old TS-808 chips too.

That's a good suggestion Nick.
I find the Ibanez TS models very lacking straight off the shelf.

I used a Maxon OD808 for years until it started falling apart on me.
I've got my eyes on what I think is the ultimate Blues overdrive,
The Damage Control Liquid Blues.

I started using Boutique effects pedals last year and I'm hooked on them.
Never going back.

I had the Brent Mason mod from Indyguitarist done on my Tubulator.

Much smoother and warmer now.

Well I'll give all of them a shot. I read up on those tubulators, and found a lot of positive remarks about them. Right now there is one of those Boss pedals Nick was talkin about on craigslist, and it's only $20 I think. I'll look in to those as well. Thanks for the recommendations!

I use one of these -:

Apparently his distortion pedals are more popular, and a lot of the web based feedback on his pedals comes from the States.

Great pedal with a broad palette of options.

Is there a site someplace where you can listen to the same riff being played on the same guitar and amp but with an assortment of different stomp boxes?

I see lots of nifty looking little boxes and read thrilling descriptions of what they do, but being able to hear and compare would be a valuable tool.

I haven't found one, but wouldn't that be a great site? I think the New Sensor website has quite a few MP3s of their Electro Harmonix stomp boxes. I'm surprised more manufacturers don't do this, especially the little boutique amp makers. You're not likely to see their amps at Guitar Center or at too many of the ma and pa stores, so how you gonna hear'em?

The BBE Green Screamer is also highly recommended. BBE makes amazing pedals.

I use a TS-9 modded by Analog Man -

Really great sounding pedal. Much better sounding than stock.

I found one of them Tubulators on Craigslist around here, so I sent the guy an email. It's about 25 minutes down the interstate, so maybe I'll go pick it up if he still has it available. It's only $20, so even if I am not a big fan of it, it's not like it's a big dent in the bank account.
