Tone Bones

I wonder what you guys think of these devices, the "tone bones", that inserted before the tubes will reduce the output power a lot and supposely convert the amp from AB to class A. That would help to get that power saturation at lower volumes.

Did you try them?
How true can that class conversion be?

Thanks in advance!

I couldn't find much info on them except a few I saw allowed you to replace a 6V6 or EL34 with the lowered powered EL84 tube. Didn't see anything about a change in class operation.

You basically end up with a lot of voltage drive on the EL84 causing it to distort. But.... instead of a 6V6/EL34 sound you get an EL84 sound.

If you want to retain the sound of your amplifier then I would recommend one of the power attenuators or hot plates. I built one for my son's Fender Twin and he loves it. He lives in an apartment which doesn't allow him to crank the volume. The attenuator lets him get the classic Fender distortion at low levels without the use of effects pedals.
