Shellac question

Postby guitarslim101 » Mon Nov 27, 2006 2:54 am

I'm finally getting around to refinishing that strat body and I decided to go with a vintage white look...does anyone know what kind of dye to use for an opaque shellac finish?

No, all I know about is using it for clear finishes, there being many different color grades of shellac. Time to hit Google, I think.

I've been looking, but with little success.

This document http://www.craftsman-style.info/paintin ... gments.htm says that lithopone (a white barium-zinc pigment) will mix with shellac. I've also run across several references to "white pigment shellac" or "white pigment shellac primer." It's used among other things for sealing smoke-damaged interior surfaces. A call to your local paint store might turn it up.

White pigmented shellac is used to seal in stains.
