Amp question: Ohm content.

Postby bignick » Mon Nov 20, 2006 12:24 am

I have a Carvin Bel Air 50 2x12 combo. The speakers in it are 8 Ohm. I have a Peavey 2x12 cab that I want to connect to it. This cab is 4 Ohm.

My amp has a selector for 4 Ohm, 8 Ohm, and 16 Ohm. I am hazy on this stuff. It has always been on 4 Ohm without the Peavey cab in addition. To add the cab, do I leave it on 4 Ohm or change it to 8 Ohm?

If the cab is 8 ohm, and if you're running it in parallel to the internal speakers, you want 4 ohms.

Run it on 4. It'll be close enough. More power will go to the 4 ohm cab than to the 8 ohm internal speakers.

If your running the cab from an external ext cab jack out with a ohm selector you would put it at the ohms of the ext cab 4ohm.

Unless its and older amp with out a ext cab jack lineout and your hooking it to the internal speakers? If so this site should help you by looking at the wiring of parallel and series connections, just look for the situation that you have and how you need to connact to get the right ohm load for the speakers. http://www.bcae1.com/spkrmlti.htm if your manually hooking your speakers to the internal ones then the series parallel hook up will need to be right depending on what ohm each set up speakers are. Because you can have two 4ohm speakers and hook them in a way that will be 8 ohms which is in series or in a way that they will have a load of 2 ohms which is in parallel.
