Need Education on Preamps

Postby Bant's Bluz » Tue Nov 07, 2006 6:41 pm

Can anyone give me a down and dirty education on preamps as well as recommendations as to a preamp that will do the job, but not cost an arm and a leg? I don't play professionally, but I do use an amp on occasion and the feedback is killing me.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Doc:

Perhaps a little more information regarding your set-up would be useful. Are you mic'ing the guitar? Or are you using a pick-up? What kind of guitar (wood/metal reso or other)?

There are certainly people with way more experience than I have, but one thing I have found is that feed back is greatly reduced if you can get the amp up high - away from the sound hole of the guitar but still in line with your ears. I do this with a PA system and it generally works well. whenever the amplified sound is pointing at your soundbox (or a microphone) then you're asking for trouble.

John, thanks for your response. To further elaborate:

One wooden body reso and one metal, spider and biscuit bridge respectively.
Both have Schatten pickups, so I'm not mic'ing.

Generally I use mag pu's for the Nationals,but I have a Shatten
in a wood bodied one, and I find the best pre-amp is a tube
driven one! everything is always mixed with a Mic also, :D
