I NEED HELP QUICK....

Postby Mojohand_13 » Wed Sep 13, 2006 2:04 am

I JUST order'd a neck from Warmoth today for a PARTSocaster (strat) that I'm having built and I order'd it with a 1 5/8 nut width because that is what there "true vintage" necks come with, BUT you can order it with a 1 11/16 for $25 extra.

My problem is that I don't really know anything about nut widths and I just went on the suggestion of the guy at Warmoth, BUT I just got done looking at the Fender site and it says that most of there "vintage" style'd guitars are 1.650 nut width. Is that a big difference when it comes to nut width ??

I'm trying to make the gutiar as "true to vintage" as possible....

So should I get the 1 11/16 nut width OR should I stay with the 1 5/8 ?????

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP!!!!!!!!

I find that even a millimetre feels noticeably different, so 0.025" would register. That said, it becomes less significant with time (ie, you get used to it - usually).

As to what you should choose: the only thing you can do is make notes of which necks and fingerboards (widths, depths, curvature,finish...) you have found to be the most playable and comfortable, and go for that. Should take about 10 years, depending on how many and how often you play.

As you apparently do not have 10 years available to you in this instance (or more probably do not wish to spend 10 years thinking about it) I suggest two approaches:

1. find out what the most commonly used width is, and choose that,
2. toss a coin.

Well, 1.6875" = 1 11/16". 1.650" is .0375" less than that. About the thickness of 4 sheets of good book paper.

I'd say ,if you ever felt 'crammed' ,or
not enough room for all my fingers" when playing first position chords, or if you have big hands, then go for the 1 11/16 nut. ...and to quote Rico, "Well, 1.6875" = 1 11/16". 1.650" is .0375" less than that. About the thickness of 4 sheets of good book paper."... thats also about the same size as the thickness of a D string . small measurement/ big difference

"small measurement/ big difference" is true.

The actual difference in the bulk of the neck (that is, measuring all round) is very roughly 1.5 times the change of width, assuming all other dimensions, such as the thickness, remain the same.
